Fit-again former Middlesex all-rounder Gareth Berg has joined Hampshire.

Berg, 34, missed much of last season after shoulder surgery but has agreed a one-season contract at the Ageas Bowl.

The South Africa-born seamer and middle-order batsman, who has played Twenty20 matches for Italy, was left without a club in October after Middlesex cancelled the final year of his contract when two shoulder surgeries left him able to play just one match during the season.

Berg had said he had originally hoped to re-sign at Middlesex, where he had played for seven seasons, following his recovery but has instead made the move south.

"I thought that it would be nice to stay at one club my whole career, but this a great fresh start for me,” Berg told Hampshire's website.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said the immediate focus was to get Berg fit and playing.

“We have agreed a deal that supports this, and I am confident he will play an important role at Hampshire this year," he said.
