England Lions have a precarious 51-run lead with one day remaining of their second unofficial Test match against South Africa A.

James Vince hit a patient 61 not out for the tourists but, with four wickets already down heading into the final day's play, they will need him to build again on Wednesday to avoid defeat.

South Africa A started the day on 389-7 and continued to bat, captain Rory Kleinveldt hitting five fours in his 22 before becoming Boyd Rankin's fourth victim - the Warwickshire seamer ended with 4-78.

Liam Plunkett (3-75) accounted for Kagiso Rabada (five) and Dane Piedt for a duck as the Lions eventually bowled the hosts out for 421, a very handy lead of 161.

The Lions were soon in trouble as Sam Robson was bowled by Kleinveldt for only one, but Yorkshiremen Adam Lyth and Alex Lees came together for a vital second-wicket stand of 77.

But England were soon up against it as Lyth (37) was caught by Reeza Hendricks off the bowling of Rabada, who struck again in his next over when he bowled Lees for 39.

However the in-form Jonathan Trott and Vince proved able allies in a fine fifth-wicket partnership that ended any hopes South Africa might have had of finishing the game inside three days.

Trott, who hit a double century in the drawn first match in Paarl, moved past 50 but fell three runs later, trapped in front by Piedt after their stand, delayed by a spell off for bad light, had reached 115.

But that would be South Africa's last success of the day as Vince, who hit 11 fours, and Jonathan Bairstow saw out the remaining overs with England on 212-4 at stumps.
