Shakib Al Hasan continues fine form as Bangladesh ease past Zimbabwe

Image: Shakib Al Hasan: Fine century and four wickets for Bangladesh all-rounder

Shakib Al Hasan played a starring role as Bangladesh cruised to an 87-run win over Zimbabwe in their opening one-day international in Chittagong.

The all-rounder became only the 12th player in ODI history to score a century and claim four or more wickets in a match.

His innings of 101 proved vital for the hosts, who had been reduced to 31-3 by the time he came to the crease in the 12th over, thanks to a couple of wickets from the lively Tendai Chatara.

Shakib put on 39 for the fourth wicket with Mominul Haque (31) whose departure off the bowling of John Nyumbu would prove to be Zimbabwe's last success for nearly 25 overs.

Shakib and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim put on 148 runs for the fifth wicket before the former fell at the end of a 99-ball innings, lofting a shot to Tinashe Panyangara at long on off the bowling of Tafadzwa Kamungozi as he looked for a first six of his innings.

Mushfiqur went on to make 65 and Bangladesh continued to pile on the runs thanks to Sabbir Rahman, whose debut one-day international innings proved to be an explosive 44 not out off only 25 balls - he hit three fours and three huge sixes.

Their innings eventually closed on 281-7 but Zimbabwe made a decent start to their reply, scoring at more than a run a ball until a pivotal eighth over, of course delivered by man-of-the-match Shakib, who had also been in fine form with the bat and ball in the recent Test series.
