Former Australian cricket captain Richie Benaud has revealed he is suffering from skin cancer.
And the 84-year-old recommends that sportsmen and sportswomen should always protect their heads when competing under a bright sun.
Benaud made his illness known to the public over the weekend, saying he was receiving treatment for skin cancer on his head.
He said: "I'm coping with it very well, the doctors are pleased. I'm going along slowly. The cancers need to be treated.
"I recommend to everyone they wear protection on their heads. Eighty-four-year olds don't seem to mend as well as they used to.
"When I was a kid, we never ever wore a cap. I wish I had. You live and learn as you go along.”
Benaud has also just recovered from chest and shoulder injuries sustained during a car crash in Sydney late last year.
He said he was doing well from the injuries which included two fractured vertebrae.
Benaud said he expects to return to commentary work when Australia face India in the fourth Test in Sydney on January 3.
As for his recovery from the car accident, he added: "Progress is slow. I've been doing a lot of walking. We (with wife Daphne) are out every morning, doing 40-minute walks every morning and it's showing beneficial effects."
