Somerset fast bowler Alfonso Thomas has had surgery on a broken ankle.

The South African, who was expected to play cricket in his home country this winter, is recovering after slipping on wet steps while playing golf in Devon.

Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard said: "It is really unfortunate news for Alfonso and we wish him a speedy recovery.

"These things do happen and we now need to focus on his rehabilitation and getting him fit to play for next season.”
