Somerset are unsure when Craig Kieswetter will be able to return after he suffered serious facial injuries against Northants that will require surgery.

Kieswetter suffered a fractured cheekbone and broken nose on the opening day of their LV= County Championship Division One clash with Northamptonshire.

The wicket-keeper, who posted a grisly photograph of his injuries on Twitter, was hurt in a freak incident when a delivery from David Willey went straight through the visor on his helmet.

He had a scan on Sunday and confirmed on Monday that he would have to go under the knife.

"Injury update: broken nose and a fractured orbital socket. Surgery is required but thankfully no lasting damage to the eye," he said.

Kieswetter has been in fantastic form this season in four-day and Twenty20 cricket where he is the second-highest run scorer on 497, behind only Surrey's Jason Roy.

“Craig is in very safe and capable hands at this time,” Somerset director of cricket Dave Nosworthy said.
