Adil Rashid claimed 4-73 as Yorkshire were able to force Durham to follow-on during day three of their LV= County Championship clash at Headingley.
The leg-spinner recorded his best bowling figures at his home ground in four years to see Durham dismissed for 231 - leaving them trailing their hosts by 195 runs in a crucial Division One fixture.
They were 59-1, still 136 adrift, second time around by stumps, Keaton Jenning the man to go when he was bowled by Adam Lyth, one of six bowlers used by Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale.
Lyth had also been involved in the dismissal of the Durham opener earlier in the day in the first innings, taking the catch at slip to send Jennings on his way for 56 after Steve Patterson had found the left-hander's outside edge.
Rashid took a return catch offered by Michael Richardson (23) on the stroke of lunch as the visitors lost three wickets in 10 runs to slip to 119-5.
Paul Collingwood gave them some hope of avoiding being asked to bat again, only for the England batsman to be stranded on 64 not out as the tail proved unable to stick around with him.
In the other top-flight fixture still in action, Middlesex closed day three on 169-2 in their second innings at Uxbridge, giving them a lead of 243 over Somerset.
Opener Nick Gubbins made an unbeaten 67 - his third half-century in four championship knocks - and Dawid Malan followed up hios first-innings hundred with 48 as the hosts pushed themselves into a solid position.
They had come out to bat again already 74 runs ahead after Somerset had opted to declare their first innings at 264-9, Nick Compton having fallen short of a second first-class century of the summer when he was dismissed for 94.
The England batsman hit nine boundaries in his patient 278-ball knock before perishing to former international team-mate Steve Finn, who finished with figures of 3-80.
Alex Barrow helped add 84 for the fifth wicket with Compton until he was run out by Gubbins for 36, while Peter Trego weighed in with 24.
Somerset had early success with the ball second time around when they removed Chris Rogers for two, Alfonso Thomas getting him caught behind, but Gubbins, Malan and Eoin Morgan - who was 45 not out at stumps - set up intriguing final day to the match.
