Division Two: Hampshire take control against Derbyshire; James Foster rescues Essex

Danny Briggs claimed 4-29 to bowl Division Two leaders Hampshire into a strong position on day two against Derbyshire in Southampton.

Left-arm spinner Briggs got through 22 overs as Derbyshire were reduced to 166-7 in reply to Hampshire's first innings of 388.

Derbyshire opener Stephen Moore made 53 and several other batsmen made starts before getting out.

Hampshire, who have won three and drawn three in the County Championship this season, earlier went from an overnight 332-7 to 388 all out, Derbyshire seamer Tony Palladino finishing with 4-97.

At The Oval, Surrey reached 134-2 in reply to Worcestershire's first-innings 476.

Rory Burns (79) and Zafar Ansari (39no) put on 127 for the second wicket before Burns fell to the final ball of day two from Saeed Ajmal (1-30)

Worcestershire's Moeen Ali - on 138 overnight - was out for 162 midway through the morning session but Ben Cox's 64 ensured the visitors picked up four batting bonus points after starting the day on 329-4.

Captain's innings

Essex skipper James Foster's 86 earned his side a first-innings lead of 36 against Glamorgan on day two at Chelmsford.

Foster arrived at the crease with Essex in trouble at 124-5 but shared half-century stands with Mark Pettini (51) and Reece Topley (5no) for the sixth and ninth wickets respectively to see them up to 280 all out.

Glamorgan seamers Michael Hogan (3-59) and Graham Wagg (3-76) each claimed three wickets.

Leicestershire were bowled out for 269 after opting to bat first on the opening day of their match against Gloucestershire at Grace Road.

Gloucestershire seamer Will Gidman did most of the damage with figures of 5-46 from 20 overs, while Leicestershire wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien top scored with 88.

Michael Klinger (7no) and Chris Dent (4no) saw Gloucestershire to 12-0 in reply at stumps.
