Kevin Pietersen, James Anderson and Graeme Swann have been left out of England's limited-overs squad in Australia.
The three senior players will instead focus on the battle to retain the Ashes and will take no part in the five one-day internationals and three Twenty20s, which take place in January and February.
Pietersen is expected to return for future limited-overs games, including next year's ICC World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup, with pace bowler Anderson expected to feature at the latter.
Test captain Alastair Cook will lead the ODI squad, with Stuart Broad once retaining his place in charge of the Twenty20 side.
"Our players that play all three forms of the game cannot play constantly 12 months of the year," said England head coach Andy Flower.
"Guys like Anderson and Pietersen are in their early 30s now and prized assets and we need to look after our prized assets.
"From a physical perspective they are always dealing with various niggles and sometimes they need to be taken out of competition."
National selector Geoff Miller supported Flower's view and emphasised the opportunity offered for other players to impress in the international one-day set-up.
"We have an important period of limited-overs cricket coming up, with an ICC World T20 in Bangladesh in March and just over a year away from the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia," he said.
"These two series against Australia allow valuable opportunities for players to push for places in both squads - and given the rivalry between the sides both series will no doubt be keenly contested."
