Mohammad Hafeez has been dropped by Pakistan for their upcoming Test with South Africa in Abu Dhabi which gets underway on 14 October.
The opener has struggled for form this year, managing just 102 runs in his last five Tests, and has therefore missed out on selection for the 12-man squad.
Hafeez scored 43 runs in a 3-0 Test-series defeat in South Africa in February and followed that up with a mere 59 in the two-Test series against Zimbabwe last month.
Three more players will be added to the squad after being assessed in a three-day practice match between Pakistan 'A' and South Africa in Sharjah starting on 8 October.
Misbah-ul Haq was last week retained as Test and one-day skipper and he will lead his side in Abu Dhabi as well as the second and final Test in Dubai which starts on 23 October.
Pakistan and South Africa will also compete in five one-day and two Twenty20 internationals, with the squads for those games to be named at a later date.
Squad: Misbah-ul Haq (capt), Khurram Manzoor, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Umar Amin, Adnan Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Abdul Rehman, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Rahat Ali.
