New Australia coach Darren Lehmann has confirmed Shane Watson will open the batting in the upcoming Ashes series.
Watson has not opened in a Test match since November 2011 in South Africa, but he was back in his preferred position in the opening tour match against Somerset in Taunton.
The 32-year-old struggled to find his form when he dropped down the order and Lehmann wants him to lead the innings against England in the opening Test at Trent Bridge on July 10.
"Yes. He'll be opening for us," said Lehmann.
"That's where we want him to bat and he's done really well for us there.
"We're quite keen for him to open and to have a big part in the Ashes and obviously make a lot of runs for us and start the innings up well."
Lehmann refused to discuss other positions in the order and has challenged the rest of the batsmen to stake their claim for spots by impressing in the warm-up games.
"If you perform you'll have a chance to play in the first Test. We want to give everyone in our squad the opportunity to perform well in the tour games," he said.
