Joe Root is hoping he has done enough to secure a place in the England team for the first Test with New Zealand.

Root impressed on his Test debut in India, scoring a half-century, and he has been a stand-out performer so far in New Zealand too in England's limited overs victories.

England have just one warm-up match in Queenstown to prepare for the first of three Tests next week, with Root a likely inclusion in the number six position he filled so well in India.

Root hopes fine form continues

There is talk that he may open with skipper Alastair Cook, the job he does for his county Yorkshire which would mean Nick Compton being dropped.

Root told: "I just want to play. I'm not really fussed where it is; I just want to try to get in the side.

"Whether it means opening the batting or at six, wherever, I just want to

represent England.

"It's a fantastic opportunity and I just want to try to take every chance I

get.

Nervous

"We've played some really good cricket, winning both the Twenty20s and one-dayers which is what we set out to do.

"I think everyone gets a bit nervous. But I got out there, and there were thousands of people there and a great atmosphere - really loud - and I just found myself smiling and enjoying myself.

"That took over for me, and I didn't really worry about anything. I just wanted to make it last for as long as possible.

"There's obviously a jump. It's tough and you're playing against some very good players.

"But more than anything you just need to make sure you know your role and try to stick to it."
