Shakib: Claimed six-wicket haul before being part of batting collapse

Sky Bet

A six-wicket haul from Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan could not stop Pakistan from moving to the brink of victory on day four of the second Test in Mirpur.

Shakib, who had already notched a century for the hosts, returned figures of 6-82 as Pakistan took a large first-innings lead after being dismissed for a total of 470.

Bangladesh were then reduced to 114-5 by stumps, meaning they will head into the final day trailing by 18 runs with Pakistan still to bat again.

The tourists resumed on 292-3 in the morning and suffered an early setback as Younus Khan added just one run to his overnight total before he was caught behind for 49 off Elias Sunny.

Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq then put on 66 for the fifth wicket with Asad Shafiq before he top-edged a ball from Shakib to Mahmudullah at short fine leg to depart for 70.

Pakistan reached 386-5 by lunch but it seemed time was running out for them to try and force a positive result that would see them take a 2-0 series win.

Setback

They suffered another setback at the start of the afternoon session when Shafiq was dismissed without adding anything to his interval score of 42.

Shakib then sparked into life, claiming the wicket of Abdur Rehman (24), who top-edged to Mahmudullah at wide slip, while also dismissing Umar Gul (11) and Saeed Ajmal (nought) to bring up his five-for.

The 24-year-old finished things off in his next over, Adnan Akmal stumped by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur at the second attempt as he went down the track in an attempt to add to his score of 53.

Bangladesh needed to negotiate 20 minutes before tea but instead were reduced to 24-2 as Gul picked up two wickets - Tamim Iqbal (21) and Shahriar Nafees (nought) - in as many balls.

Nazimuddin survived the hat-trick ball but was dismissed at the start of the seventh over for 12 as a Rehman delivery bowled him after skidding off the surface.

Mahmudullah (32) then chased a delivery outside off stump from Aizaz Cheema and succeeded only in skying the ball to Rehman at deep point.

That brought man of the moment Shakib out to join Nasir Hossain (30 not out) in the middle, but he could not repeat his first-innings heroics and added just six before he was removed by a fine diving catch from Azhar Ali at gully.
