Seam bowler Stuart Broad failed to recover from an upset stomach in time for England's World Cup Group B match against India in Bangalore on Sunday.
Broad was replaced by Ajmal Shahzad in the starting XI and England also opted to pick Michael Yardy as an extra spinner - at the expense of batsman Ravi Bopara.
"We've had to make changes to the team because Stuart Broad still has not recovered from his upset stomach and that's unfortunate," England captain Andrew Strauss said after losing the toss
India chose to bat first in sunny conditions at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Tournament co-hosts India made one change from their win over Bangladesh a week ago, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla in for seamer Shantakumaran Sreesanth.
