Kevin Pietersen hit 36 in the opening innings of his two-match stint for South African domestic side the Dolphins
The England batsman, who is looking to regain his form ahead of this winter's Ashes, shared an 80-run partnership with captain Imraan Khan before he was dismissed after facing 48 deliveries on the first day of the fixture against the Warriors in Pietermaritzburg, the city of his birth.
Pietersen came to the crease with the home side at 79-2 following the losses of Divan van Wyk (3) and Brad Moses (26).
After a sedate start, he began to show more intent as his innings progressed.
But, after hitting six fours, he came down the wicket aggressively to Jon-Jon Smuts and was caught by Andrew Birch while attempting to go over mid-on, leaving the Dolphins on 159-3.
The 30-year-old is desperate to get back to his best for the series in Australia after a mediocre summer in which he made just one score of over 50 in Test cricket.
He last scored a Test century on the tour of West Indies last March and was dropped for the recent limited-overs series against Pakistan due to poor form.
As well as the game against the Warriors, Pietersen will also play against the Titans in Durban next week.
