Dan Christian has been forced to pull out of Australia's squad for the two Twenty20 internationals against Pakistan after suffering a calf injury.
The seamer had joined Hampshire for their Friends Provident t20 campaign - although he has struggled.
He has so far taken just two wickets in four games - and limped out of the attack after just two balls against Gloucestershire.
Physio Alex Kountouris said: "Dan Christian injured his calf muscle playing for Hampshire 10 days ago and has not recovered sufficiently to resume playing. He will therefore miss the two Twenty20 games against Pakistan."
As a result, Australia have called in James Hopes for the matches at Edgbaston on Monday and Tuesday.
National selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch added: "It is unfortunate for Dan Christian that he's ruled out of this series through injury.
"James Hopes is being brought in to the Twenty20 squad and is an ideal replacement with the flexibility he gives us with both bat and ball."
