Pakistan have appointed Mohammad Yousuf captain for the Test tour of New Zealand after Younus Khan requested a break from cricket.

"Younus has asked for a rest so we have appointed Yousuf as captain for the three-Test tour."

Younus asked for some time out following Pakistan's one-day series defeat to the Black Caps and batsman Yousuf has been named to fill the vacant post.

"Yes, Younus has asked for a rest so we have appointed Yousuf as captain for the three-Test tour," said Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt.

"It has nothing to do with the defeat against New Zealand."

Pakistan narrowly lost the three-match series 2-1 after a slender seven-run defeat in the final match at Abu Dhabi.

It was reported by Pakistani media after the one-day series defeat that Younus had lost the confidence of his fellow players and they were calling for him to be replaced.

Pakistan will fly from Dubai to New Zealand later this week to play three Tests against the Black Caps.
