Newman: Middlesex switch

Middlesex have signed Scott Newman after the opening batsman departed Surrey by mutual consent.

"Batsmen tend to improve with age, and we believe Scott's best days are ahead of him."
Vinny Codrington Quotes of the week

Newman, 29, spent nine years at the Oval but fell out of favour last season and was sent out on loan to Nottinghamshire.

Surrey confirmed on Monday morning that the left-hander was leaving the county and, in the afternoon, Middlesex revealed he would be making the switch across the Thames.

"In Scott Newman, Middlesex have secured the services of a well-respected and vastly-experienced county professional," Middlesex chief executive Vinny Codrington said.

Delighted

"We're delighted that Scott has agreed to sign with Middlesex for the next three seasons, ahead of the other counties that have shown an interest in signing him.

"Batsmen tend to improve with age, and we believe Scott's best days are ahead of him."

Newman, who averages 40.54 in first-class cricket, added: "After a difficult season in 2009, I am delighted to have signed a permanent contract with Middlesex.

"I am relishing the opportunity of establishing my place within the Middlesex side and to playing some regular first-team cricket."
