Champions Twenty20 League - Group B
New South Wales 144-6 (S M Katich 53) v Eagles 91-9
New South Wales beat Eagles by 53 runs
Captain Simon Katich led from the front as New South Wales powered to a 53-run victory over the Diamond Eagles in Group B of the Champions League.
The Australia international showed his class in the shorter format with a quickfire 53 before marshalling his troops expertly in the field.
Katich's innings came off 41 balls and was the cornerstone of the Blues' total of 144-6. David Warner (23 off 31) and Moises Henriques (27 off 19) also chipped in with solid contributions.
With pace duo Brett Lee and Stuart Clark in the Blues line-up the chase was never going to be straightforward for the South Africa-based Eagles, and so it proved.
Only two batsmen reached double figures, former Kent all-rounder Ryan McLaren scoring a spirited 40 after a flurry of early wickets left his side reeling on 36-6.
Clark finished with superb figures of 3-12 from his four overs and Henriques completed an impressive all-round display with 2-13.
The Eagles must now beat Sussex Sharks in their final group game to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Speaking after the match, victorious captain Katich said: "It was a good win but it was a pretty important toss to win.
"The wicket got lower and slower as the game went on and I thought our bowlers did a great job in the first six overs - the fielding was very sharp as well.
"We felt 140 was going to be a pretty good score on that wicket, there wasn't a great deal of bounce, and thankfully it turned out that way. It was a great effort all round."
