Vaughan picked by MCC

Former England captain set to play against Durham on April 9

Vaughan: Looking for recall

Michael Vaughan has been named in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) side to play county champions Durham in the traditional season-opener at Lord's on April 9.

"All the players in the MCC team will be hungry to prove a point to the selectors, so we are confident we will see four days of tough, hard-fought cricket."

Quotes of the week

The Yorkshire batsman, who has scored six centuries for England at Lord's, is one of six players in the MCC team with Test experience.

The four-day match against Durham will provide Vaughan, who led England to Ashes glory in 2005, with an early chance to impress the selectors as he looks to win back his place in the team for the summer series against Australia.

Ian Bell, who has been vying with Owais Shah for the number three spot in England's batting order in Vaughan's absence, has also been included, with Kent's Robert Key to captain the team.

Opportunity

England's national selector Geoff Miller said: "All the players in the MCC team will be hungry to prove a point to the selectors, so we are confident we will see four days of tough, hard-fought cricket.

"Every English cricketer wants to be involved with the national set-up this summer because the world's eyes will be on England for both the npower Ashes Series and the ICC World Twenty20."

Essex and England wicket-keeper James Foster will be behind the stumps and the MCC side also features promising Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

England duo Stephen Harmison and Paul Collingwood are both set to play for Durham although it is not yet known whether fast bowler Harmison or all-rounder Collingwood will be playing in the MCC match.
