Leg spinner Rashid will also travel to the sub-continent
England have called up Amjad Khan to replace the injured Ryan Sidebottom in their squad for the scheduled two-Test tour of India.
The Kent fast bowler will join Kevin Pietersen's squad if they decide to fly back to India following November's terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid will also travel but is not expected to feature in the playing XI at any stage.
Nottinghamshire left-armer Sidebottom is not among those currently at a training camp in Abu Dhabi ahead of the first Test in Chennai, which is due to start on Thursday.
The 30-year-old suffered a side strain during the aborted one-day series and has failed to recover in time to play any part in the Tests.
Copenhagen-born Khan, 28, was awarded British citizenship in 2006 - following a breakthrough season for Kent a year earlier.
Drafted in
But after being elevated to the England Academy squad, he subsequently suffered a serious knee injury which required surgery and kept him out for the entire 2007 season.
"It's a dream come true," said Khan. "Although I never actually thought of playing for England growing up."
Khan edged out Sajid Mahmood in the selection equation - the pair were drafted in as one-day cover hours before the tour of India was aborted.
"I must have done something right in the last couple of days," said Khan.
"Saj and I got picked for the one-dayers and I thought if they were going to pick me then there was no reason they should not pick me for the Tests.
"I thought I had a chance but I knew it would come down to form on the day - that sort of stuff.
"I first believed I could play for England probably in 2002 when I took 60 wickets in a season and I was only 21. People talked about what it took to play international cricket and I felt that I had most of the attributes."
