Durham bowler cleared to play in the first Test

Steve Harmison could play in the first Test against Sri Lanka after his back injury was not as serious as first feared. The Durham fast bowler suffered a back spasm in the warm-up game against the SLC Board President's XI, leaving him unable to bowl. However, Harmison has been given the all clear to return to training - with a view to him playing in the first Test. Harmison has had a troubled time since teaming up with England in Sri Lanka. Having played two games for Highveld Lions in South Africa to prove his fitness, Harmison flew out to the sub-continitent but his first appearance was delayed. A mix-up at the airport saw his bowling boots arrive late - and when they did turn up, Harmison struggled for line and rhythm. England coach Peter Moores kept faith in Harmison, only for his to breakdown with a back spasm in the final warm-up game.
