Lou Vincent has been called up to New Zealand's Test squad for the tour of South Africa in November.
Vincent, 28, replaces fellow batsman Peter Fulton in the 15-man party after Fulton was ruled out due to a knee injury.
Fulton requires surgery but is expected to be available for Chappell-Hadlee one-day series in Australia in December.
Craig Cumming and Michael Papps are set to open for the Black Caps in South Africa, leaving Vincent, who played the last of his 22 Tests more than two years ago, to compete for a place in the middle-order.
The two-game series features back-to-back Tests at the New Wanderers (Nov 8-12) and Centurion (Nov 16-20).
