County Championship Division One: Alex Lees ton boosts Yorkshire

Alex Lees scored exactly 100 as Yorkshire made a steady reply to Nottinghamshire’s 428 in their LV= County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge.

The champions closed the second day on 226-3 thanks to opener Lees’ 224-ball innings which featured 11 fours.

Lees brought up the seventh century of his career with a three off the bowling of Samit Patel, but he was caught behind by Chris Read from the next delivery he faced from Will Gidman.

Will Rhodes (41) and Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara (57) provided good support to Lees with stands of 66 and 116 for the first and second wicket respectively.

Notts had resumed their first innings on 393-7 with Alex Hales unbeaten on 222, but the England batsman could only add a further 14 runs before he was bowled by Steven Patterson (3-78) as the hosts were eventually dismissed for 428.

Worcestershire opening batsman Richard Oliver was another centurion on the second day of his side’s clash with Sussex at Hove.

Oliver made 101 to notch the second first-class ton of his career as Worcestershire accumulated 389 in reply to the home side’s 345 all out.

The 25-year-old’s innings lasted 212 balls and included 13 fours.

His team-mate Alexei Kervezee fell seven runs short of his century when he was dismissed for a quickfire 93 by Ajmal Shahzad, but he played a key role as the visitors rallied from 227-6.

Kervezee, whose 108-ball knock featured 12 fours and two sixes, shared an 88-run seventh-wicket stand with Gareth Andrew, who made 70 from 114 deliveries, while No 10 Sachithra Senanayake chipped in with a useful 31.

Sussex closed the day 36 runs behind after moving to 8-0 from three overs in their second innings.

Warwickshire wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose was the mainstay of his side’s innings as they were bowled out for 280 at Edgbaston after Hampshire made 319 on the opening day.

Ambrose scored 113 from 159 balls, including 17 fours, as his team-mates struggled to make an impact.

The hosts were reduced to 120-6 at one stage, but Keith Barker (31) and Jeetan Patel (30) stood firm alongside Ambrose in partnerships of 65 for both the seventh and eighth wickets respectively.

James Tomlinson finished with figures of 3-53 for Hampshire, while Gareth Berg (2-58), Sean Ervine (2-43) and Andre Adams (2-54) all picked up two wickets apiece.

Hampshire then closed on 38-1 in their second innings, for a lead of 77, with Liam Dawson 22no and Michael Carberry 14no after Barker had dismissed skipper Jimmy Adams with the first ball of the innings, caught behind by Ambrose.
