Kumar Sangakkara struck an unbeaten century on debut to overshadow Kevin Pietersen's failed return and help Surrey finish day one on 363-3 in their LV= County Championship Division Two clash against Glamorgan.

The SWALEC visitors won the toss and Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari passed 100 for the first wicket before the former was first to fall to Graham Wagg for an exact half century.

Sangakkara then entered the fray in Surrey colours for the first time before Burns' opening partner Ansari (48) departed seven runs later with the score 111-2.

Pietersen, 34, making his first championship appearance since June 2013, joined Sangakkara at the crease hoping to find a way back into the England set-up ahead of the summer's Ashes Series.

He struck two quick boundaries but that was just about as good as it got for England's highest run scorer in all competitions as his 28-ball stay ended for 19 runs when he pushed hard at Craig Meschede's medium pace and edged to Colin Ingram at first slip.

But Sangakkara and new partner Steven Davies then brilliantly guided Surrey from 150-3 through an unbeaten 213-run partnership to 363-3 at stumps.

The Sri Lankan's century arrived with his 14th four in 160 balls, while Davies reached three figures a little quicker from 152 balls, his 15th boundary bringing up his ton.

Sangakkara (112) and Davies (109) will be looking to bring maximum batting points up in the morning by taking Surrey past 400 runs.

Elsewhere, New Zealand star Jesse Ryder played a starring role for Essex with the ball as Kent were bowled out for 193 in 68.5 overs in Chelmsford.

However, Ryder, along with his team-mates, failed with the bat as the hosts collapsed to 67-6, trailing the visitors by 126 runs at the end of the first day.

Ryder took five wickets, three in the morning session, before returning to get Mitch Claydon in the afternoon and Darren Stevens, who made 50 for the visitors, just before tea.

The Kiwi's 5-43 figures were impressive but he managed only 12 with the bat in being one of Stevens' three victims for 23 runs from seven overs.

Matt Coles (2-20) was also prominent in the Kent attack as the home side's top order was obliterated, with James Porter out to the final ball of the day, through Stevens, for just three.

Much will now depend on Jaik Mickelburgh if Essex are to mount a serious challenge to Kent's modest total.

He reached the close on 20, an effort which has so far lasted nearly an hour and a half and consumed 58 deliveries with just one boundary.

Meanwhile, at Derbyshire's County Ground Alviro Petersen's 115 rescued Lancashire from a deep hole as they rallied from 55-4 in the afternoon session.

The visitors were in trouble at lunch, with Tony Palladino claiming two wickets and Mark Footitt and Shiv Thakor one apiece, but the South African found an able ally in captain Tom Smith.

Smith fell for 38 just before tea to become Alex Hughes' solitary scalp, after a fifth-wicket stand of 130 ahead of Petersen finally going to Footitt (2-63).

Peter Siddle (46) and Alex Davies (40) then put on 86 for the sixth wicket in 26 overs before the Australian fell four runs before his half century quickly followed by Davies, who became Thakor's second victim (2-28), in the last ball of the day to finish 292-8 at stumps.
