England are hopeful that Stuart Broad will be fit to play in the fifth Test against India at The Oval, despite having suffered a broken nose at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The paceman was hit in the face during the afternoon session when he tried to hook Varun Aaron for a third successive six, only for the ball to find its way past the grille at the front of his helmet.
Broad left the field with blood pouring from a nose injury, and, having retired hurt, was subsequently taken to hospital, where he watched England dismiss India for just 161 to wrap up a comprehensive victory.
Broad admitted he may have to wear a protective mask in the fifth Test. He tweeted: "Little bit sore this morning but not too bad! Doc did a great job with the stitches. On to The Oval! (With a mask)."
The England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Twitter: "X-rays confirm a fractured nose.
"Stuart will have treatment over the course of the week and the medical team anticipate he will be available for the fifth Test."
England captain Alastair Cook said: "It's a nasty blow and we wish him well.
"It's a shock when you see that happen with the helmets these days."
Broad enjoyed watching the England victory and tweeted: "Amazing win that!! Watched the last eight wickets in a hospital! One to go, come on boys!"
Despite missing the India second innings, Broad was named man-of-the-match, having taken 6-25 earlier in the match to set up the innings and 54 run victory.
Having been 1-0 down after two Tests, England now lead the five-match series 2-1.
The final Test starts on Friday 15 August at The Oval and the hosts will be keen to have the in-form Broad fit and available, although head coach Peter Moores says no risks will be taken.
"We wouldn't put Stuart in any jeopardy at all," said Moores. "But, if he's okay and fully fit, we'll definitely play him, because of his quality.
"We're looking to play him if we can and he'll want to play, I'm sure. It depends a little bit on what the specialist says."
