Scotland bowler Majid Haq has been sent home from the World Cup over comments posted on social media following his omission from their side in Hobart.

Haq, Scotland's leading all-time wicket-taker, was not selected for the 148-run defeat by Sri Lanka, and he tweeted: "Always tougher when you're in the minority! #colour #race"

The post has since been deleted.

It is not the first time the off-spinner has been punished for social media comments. Haq will also serve a three-week ban at the start of the season from his league, the West District Cricket Union, for previous comments on social media.

The 32-year-old has taken 60 one-day international wickets and also holds his country's appearance record with 209 caps.

Haq, who was born in Scotland and is of Pakistani descent, also has three ODI half-centuries to his name and opened the batting for Scotland during the 2007 World Cup.

However, he has struggled to take wickets in the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, with just three in four matches and his best score is the 31 he made against fellow associate nation Afghanistan.

Scotland have lost all five of their matches - against New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - and have just one game remaining, against Australia in Hobart on March 14.

A statement from Cricket Scotland read: "Following a breach of Cricket Scotland's internal code of conduct, international team member, Majid Haq, is travelling home from the ICC World Cup.

"No further statement will be issued until internal processes have been completed in due course."
