England bowler Stuart Broad cannot wait to start playing cricket again

Paceman Stuart Broad says he is fit and raring to go ahead of a massive year for the England cricket team.

The Nottinghamshire bowler is a key member of the England attack but has not played for his country since the final Test of last year against India at The Oval, having had surgery on his right knee.

But the operation went well and Broad is looking forward to playing for England in the upcoming Tri-series in Australia, which will serve as a warm-up for the World Cup.

Asked how his knee was by Sky Sports, Broad said: “Really good actually. It has been three and a half months since my operation.

“It was quite swollen for a couple of weeks. The swelling was probably the hardest thing to get rid of. A lot of ice, a lot of rest.

“But I must have bowled nearly 100 overs now. I went to South Africa for two weeks with the ECB bowling camp and it has come on really well.

“We had a little nets session at Loughborough Uni on Saturday, bowling at ‘Titchy’ (James) Taylor. (Chris) Woakesy came down, Jimmy (Anderson) came down.

“I feel fresh, I am desperate to play straight away.

“Obviously I have not spoken to the new captain (Eoin Morgan) and coach (Peter Moores) about that but I’ll certainly be putting my hand up for selection.”

Broad had surgery on the patella tendon of his right knee and says the timing was right.

“It (the injury) was a bit like a doctor going to work with a migraine,” he explained. “You can do it but it is a bit fuzzy.

“During Test matches in the summer, I was in a hot bath from 2am to 5am because it was too sore to sleep, and I could only sit in a car for 10-15 minutes before having to get out and stretch it out.

“It was an ideal time to get it done. I have missed three months in time but I only missed the Sri Lanka one-day series and the India one-day series, so I have not missed a major amount of cricket, and 2015 is such a massive year.”
