Jesse Ryder’s decision to withdraw from the recent New Zealand 'A' tour of the Middle East cost him his chance of playing at next year's World Cup, according to a national selector.

The 30-year-old all-rounder has not played international cricket since being dropped in February for disciplinary reasons.

On Monday, Ryder was omitted from New Zealand's 30-man provisional squad for the tournament to be held in March and April 2015.

Bruce Edgar, the national selection general manager, told a New Zealand newspaper: "We wanted him on the 'A' tour to see how he goes around the team and within the group.

"When he pulled out he left us with no real information about him and as a result we didn't have enough conviction to warrant his selection.

"We weighed it all up and thought we needed to see more. We never got to see enough and as a result we cut him from the 30."
