Chris Adams is disappointed the ECB did not hold a formal press conference to clarify Kevin Pietersen's exit from the England fold.
Pietersen was controversially left out of the England squad for the tour of the West Indies and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.
When asked why Pietersen had been omitted, national selector James Whitaker told Sky Sports News: "That is a legal position and at the moment I am not at liberty to say.
But Adams, who coached Pietersen when he was at Surrey, feels Whitaker and recently-installed ECB managing director Paul Downton would have benefited from holding a question-and-answer session with the media to explain the decision.
"I'm really disappointed that the ECB didn't come out with an old-fashioned press conference and front up and say what has happened," he said.
"I understand why, because of the legal issues, and the need to lock down on any uncomfortable questions.
"The new people who have just come in, Paul Downton and James Whitaker, are terrific people and I would have backed them to deal with that.
"I think that's what the public wanted yesterday and they didn't get it."
Pietersen's omission has been the talk of the sport, with several players and pundits expressing their surprise and shock at the move.
Graeme Swann, who retired from all cricket midway through England's disastrous winter tour of Australia, said he was 'baffled' by the decision.
Adams, who worked with Pietersen at Surrey for three years, said the player was never a problem and that he 'fully bought in to' the club's ethos.
"In his time at Surrey, he was excellent as a cricketer and as a personality in the dressing room," he said.
"That was his third county and Kevin needed to make that work. As the manager, I was given him as a player, I didn't go out and sign him.
"We made the decision to engage him as a player in what we did without necessarily giving him the responsibility.
"He fully bought in to what we were doing, he was great with the youngsters and played some superb innings."
Has the ECB made the right decision to end Kevin Pietersen's England career?
