Rested paceman James Anderson has called on England to inflict more misery on Australia ahead of the one-day series which starts on Friday.

Andy Flower's hosts will be in buoyant mood at Headingley, taking on their old enemy again in the first of five matches in the shorter format and coming three weeks after their Ashes triumph.

With a busy winter schedule on the horizon, which includes another Test series with the Aussies, Anderson has been handed a well-earned break but will be cheering his team-mates on to more glory in Leeds.

"Anytime you can beat Australia is a good thing," the 31-year-old Lancashire bowler told Sky Sports News.

"The guys going in to the side will want to win and it's ultra-competitive against Australia every time you play against them.

"It's a great opportunity to keep the momentum going from the Test series and also a great opportunity for the guys coming in to the side who haven't played a lot of one day cricket to get a lot of experience.

"It's frustrating to miss cricket at any point. Ask any player and they'll say they never like missing cricket. But we've got a huge winter series to look forward to and looking at the bigger picture, it's probably a good time to get a rest.

"It also gives players with less experience a taste of international cricket and it might even unearth a star of the future who could be crucial for us in the next few months."
