Kevin Pietersen working hard in gym in bid to be fit for third Ashes Test

Kevin Pietersen: In the gym to be fit for Old Trafford

England batsman Kevin Pietersen is continuing his rehabilitation in the gym in a bid to be fit for the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford next week.

The 33-year-old is a doubt for the clash after suffering a calf strain during the 347-run win over Australia in the second Test at Lord's which left him unable to field during the tourists' second innings.

He has been following a treatment programme set out by the ECB and was keen to make clear he's been spending a lot of time in the gym by taking to Twitter, telling his followers: "Might try getting in the car this am and when turning on the ignition, say the words, "gym for rehab.." Surely it will drive me there.."

Pietersen has suffered an injury-plagued year, missing the final Test in New Zealand in March, the return series against the Black Caps and the Champions Trophy earlier this summmer with a knee problem.

He has had a quiet start to the Ashes, hitting 64 in the second innings at Trent Bridge before failing twice at Lord's.

Nottinghamshire's James Taylor remains the favourite to replace Pietersen in Manchester should he fail to prove his fitness.
