Mike Gatting says there is no reason to think England will not move 3-0 up in the Ashes series at Old Trafford next week.
The former England captain poured water on talk of a whitewash but admitted the way the Aussies are playing at the moment England should seal another Ashes triumph in Manchester.
"I think they'll be looking at consolidating and thinking about Old Trafford, making sure they win that one first," he said.
"I don't think they'll be looking too far ahead and I hope that's what they're doing.
"It will be great for Jimmy Anderson back on his home ground and hopefully if they prepare well I don't see why they won't go 3-0 up."
Gatting said it was time the batsmen started to contribute more runs if Australia can be expected to compete in the third Test.
"They're certainly not playing very well. They are talented players, otherwise they wouldn't be picked for Australia but they're not playing very well at all.
"It's almost like the bowlers are doing everything. They are bowling pretty well and batting better than some of their batters.
"Pattinson proved that and they'll be sad to see him going home."
Mike Gatting was speaking at the ECB's 'Kids Go Free' launch in which all 18 counties have agreed to offer free tickets to children under 16 attending Yorkshire Bank 40 games (with a paying adult) from August 2-26.
