Tom Milnes could get a chance to impress for Warwickshire this week after Chris Woakes was forced out of the first match of their County Championship title defence.

Woakes had been expected to play in the Division One champions' first few games but the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed he has been withdrawn because of fatigue.

The all-rounder was with England all winter but played sparingly on the tour of New Zealand and was not used at all in the three-Test series, bar a few appearances as a substitute fielder.

With Keith Barker and Boyd Rankin ruled out by injury, Milnes could come into a four-man seam attack which will also include winter signing Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

The 20-year-old staked his case for a place in their warm-up win over Oxford University at the weekend, taking nine wickets across two innings and adding an unbeaten 50 in Warwickshire's opening knock.

Milnes said: "I was just looking to spend some time in the middle but it was great to get 50. And then I managed to take a couple of wickets in the evening to finish off a nice day.

"But it is just a case of preparing for this week when hopefully I will be involved. All I can focus on - and I know it's a cliche, but it's true - is doing what I do so that I give myself the best possible chance.

"I would like to think I did okay when I got my chance in the championship last season so now it's up to me to seize any opportunities that come along this year.

"Warwickshire have the best seam attack in the country but the guys are all involved in the England set-up so hopefully I will get some opportunities and then it's up to me to take advantage."
