Australian Shaun Tait will join Essex for the duration of this summer's Friends Life t20 competition.
The 30-year-old is a one-day specialist having represented Australia in 35 ODIs and 19 Twenty20 games.
He has also played in three Test matches, with his most recent appearance for Australia being a one-day international in March 2011.
Tait has taken 62 ODI wickets and 28 at T20 level for Australia and will be available to play for the Eagles through to finals day - should they qualify.
Essex head coach Paul Grayson said: "Shaun is an outstanding Twenty20 bowler who has genuine pace and match-winning ability.
"We welcome him to the club for the Twenty20 campaign and are hopeful of success with him in the team."
Tait has previously had spells with Durham and Glamorgan, and becomes the second Australian to join the Chelmsford-based club this year following the signing of batsman Rob Quiney for the first three months of the campaign.
