Veteran batsman signs one-year contract extension

Veteran batsman David Sales will be staying on at Northamptonshire after agreeing a new one-year contract. The 34-year-old has been with the county all of his career, making his first-class debut in 1994 and becoming the youngest player to score a county championship double century two years later at the age of 18. Sales has played 12 championship matches this season, scoring two centuries and one 50, and averaged 42.5 in eight Clydesdale Bank 40 outings. "I am obviously delighted to continue my association with Northants Cricket," said Sales. "With (head coach) David Ripley at the helm, and the squad we have here at the County Ground, I believe we can push on to bigger and better things next season and into the future." Ripley added: "It's great that David has shown great form and fitness over the second half of the season. David is a quality senior professional in the dressing room who can contribute in all forms of the game." Northamptonshire have also confirmed that Alex Wakely has been installed as the club's official vice-captain.
