Jesse Ryder insists he will return to cricket later this year, despite having turned down a contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Ryder rejected a central contract from NZC in May in favour of taking time away from competition to concentrate on fitness and personal issues.
The 27-year-old left-hander has not played for New Zealand since February, but, speaking to reporters on Thursday, Ryder revealed that his decision not to take up an international contract did not mean he would not play when the domestic season resumes.
He said: "This was never about taking the year off and not doing any cricket. I just wanted a little bit of a break to try new things."
