Gautam Gambhir will captain the Kolkata Knight Riders in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League after Sourav Ganguly, who led the franchise in their first and third season, went unsold in January's player auction.
Bought for $2.4 million, left-handed batsman Gambhir brings to Kolkata a wealth of experience at international level and some insight at the helm, having captained the Delhi Daredevils in the 2010 IPL and 2009 Champions League.
In the absence of regular skipper Mahendra Dhoni, Gambhir also led India to a five-nil ODI series whitewash over New Zealand last year.
"I believe that the Kolkata management has put together a terrific team and I am looking forward to the season," enthused Gambhir.
Poor performances, which included finishing dead-last in 2009, in previous episodes of the Twenty20 tournament saw the Knight Riders bolster their charges at the player auction.
Aside from Gambhir, English batsman Eoin Morgan, South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis, Australian pace ace Brett Lee and Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan have all been recruited at various levels of expense.
