England star to have knee surgery at end of World Cup
England batsman Paul Collingwood has been scheduled for keyhole surgery on his knee at the end of the World Cup.
The 34-year-old had scans on both knees during England's Group B campaign, with cartilage damage being revealed.
He will remain with the squad for the knockout stages of the tournament and is available for Saturday's quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Surgery will follow immediately, though, meaning Collingwood is likely to miss a significant portion of the Indian Premier League season after being bought by the Rajasthan Royals.
Collingwood, who has struggled for form in recent months, played in four of England's six group matches but was dropped for the victories over South Africa and West Indies.
"Paul felt some discomfort in his left knee during the group stages of the World Cup, and a precautionary scan ahead of England's match against South Africa showed no significant damage," ECB chief medical officer Nick Peirce said.
"However, further assessment suggests a loose piece of cartilage floating in his knee that will require surgical removal.
"We'll be able to establish a definitive rehabilitation timescale following surgery - but we expect Paul to make a full recovery in due course."
