Cricket South Africa have cancelled batsman Herschelle Gibbs' contract by mutual consent.
Gibbs has appeared in 90 Tests and 248 ODIs for the Proteas since his debut in 1996 and last featured 11 months ago on the tour of India.
The 36-year-old caused a stir in November when he released a tell-all autobiography that detailed an alleged clique in South Africa's squad during Mickey Arthur's tenure as coach.
"It has been decided this is the best way forward for both parties," CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said in a statement.
"Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments."
CSA had asked its legal counsel to look into all the claims made in Gibbs' book.
Arthur, now coach of Western Australia, hit back at Gibbs describing him as "somewhat of a loner", who was not fully in tune with the rest of the group.
Revelations
Other revelations ranged from his troubles with alcohol to an incident of smoking marijuana with some of his team-mates on a trip to the West Indies.
Amongst the highlights of his career was the 175 off 111 balls he made when South Africa chased down a world record 438 against Australia at the Wanderers in 2006.
The right-hander scored 6,167 runs at an average of 41.95 in Tests and 8,094 ODI runs at 36.13.
Majola added: "On behalf of CSA I would like to wish Herschelle all the best for his future and to thank him for the contribution he has made to the successes of the Proteas over an extended period of time.
"Herschelle represented our country for 14 years with distinction and I don't think any cricket lover will ever forget the magnificent innings he played in the famous 438 game against Australia.
"Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments from the parties concerned."
