Batsman pays price for lack of runs

Derbyshire have released batsman John Sadler after three seasons with the county. Sadler, who started his county career with Yorkshire and has also played for Leicestershire, failed to hold down a regular first-team place after his switch to Derbyshire in 2007. The Dewsbury-born 28-year-old averages just 22 in the County Championship during that span and has been largely limited to the one-day arena in recent months. "It's sad for John because he's a nice lad and he came to the club with high hopes but he hasn't performed to the levels he expected and we required of him," head of cricket John Morris told the Derby Telegraph. "We can't just carry batters and the amount of runs he's scored over the three years he's been with us have not been enough."

Upheaval

Sadler is the second player to be shown the door at Derbyshire in the space of a fortnight, wicketkeeper Lee Goddard having also been released. Morris will have to reshape his squad next season as all-rounders Graham Wagg and Robin Peterson will also be leaving at the end of the current campaign. Wagg, who has played little in 2010 due to an Achilles problem, has opted not to renew his contract and is expected to join Glamorgan, while South African Peterson is unable to return because of visa regulations. Australian batsman Chris Rogers, who recently stood down as captain after nearly three years in the role, could also move on.
