Mark Pettini has been granted a short rest by Essex after a difficult few months for the club captain.
Pettini has led the county to just one win in nine championship matches this season and recently handed over the captaincy to James Foster for the remainder of the Friends Provident t20.
Essex first-team coach Paul Grayson intends to make a decision on the 26-year-old's future as skipper when he returns from his break.
"Mark (Pettini) and myself had a discussion on Saturday (June 11) following the Glamorgan game," Grayson told the county's official website.
"Mark has been under an immense amount of pressure and needs a short break from the game.
"There has obviously been a few issues on and off the field. In addition we have been faced with a hectic cricket schedule in the opening months of the season.
"Mark will take a break for seven to 10 days, after that we will discuss the situation.
"I am confident Mark will return and be back fit and fresh and back to his best form. James (Foster) will be captain for the remainder of the 2010 Twenty20 campaign".
