Fast bowler called into squad for Asia Cup

Shoaib Akhtar could make his first appearance in international cricket for over a year after being included in Pakistan's squad for the Asia Cup. The veteran quick bowler has not represented his country since the limited-overs series against Australia last May. Akhtar's international future looked tenuous after he was overlooked for a central contract in March and his call-up comes as a surprise. Injuries have blighted the 34-year-old's career, and rigorous medical checks were carried out before he was named in the 15-man squad.

Former skipper Shoaib Malik also received a call-up for the tournament with Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh after winning his appeal against a one-year ban imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. "Akhtar and Malik passed fitness tests and hence were included in the squad and it's a balanced squad," PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said. "He (Akhtar) was bowling extremely well. I saw him bowling six overs and I am more than satisfied with his fitness." Three uncapped players - Shahzaib Hasan, Umar Amin and Asad Shafiq - were also included for the one-day international tournament from June 15-24. It will be the first competition for Shahid Afridi since being made captain in all forms of the game. Pakistan squad: Shahid Afridi (captain), Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Shahzaib Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Amin, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamir, Abdul Rehman, Saeed Ajmal.
