New Zealand on top in third Test despite Pakistan opener's ton

Imran Farhat struck a defiant century but New Zealand enjoyed the better of the first day in the deciding Test against Pakistan.
Opening batsman Farhat carried his bat for 117 as Pakistan were bowled out for 223 in 64.3 overs after opting to bat first at McLean Park in Napier.
Medium pacer Iain O'Brien (4-35), making his farewell appearance before retiring from international cricket, had blitzed Pakistan's top order with a spell of four wickets for 15 runs during a frantic morning session to send the tourists to lunch in disarray at 83-5.
That became 90-6 in early afternoon when Chris Martin (1-37) removed Kamran Akmal for 22.
But Farhat finally received some support from number eight Mohammad Aamir, who helped add 69 for the seventh wicket.
Aamer faced 82 deliveries for his 23 and Umar Gul also chipped in with 24 to ensure Pakistan got beyond 200.
Drought
Farhat brought up his third Test century, but first for five-and-a-half years, from 138 deliveries shortly before tea.
And, as seamer Daryl Tuffey (4-52) claimed the last four wickets of the innings - all caught behind - the left-hander stood firm to finish unbeaten on 117, having struck 14 fours and a six during his 169-ball effort.
Farhat is the first Pakistani to carry his bat in a Test since Saeed Anwar at Eden Gardens in 1999 - and just the fourth in total.
New Zealand openers Tim McIntosh (31no) and debutant BJ Watling (13no) reached 47-0 in reply by stumps and will resume on day two with their team just 176 behind.
