Michael Vaughan is keen to press his claims for an England recall by scoring heavily for Yorkshire at county level in the early stages of the season.
The Yorkshire batsman has not played international cricket since stepping down as England captain following the third-Test defeat to South Africa last summer, but remains centrally contracted and hopes to regain his place.
Vaughan begins his county campaign on Wednesday in Yorkshire's Division One trip to Durham.
With uncertainty currently surrounding the number three position in England's batting order, the 34-year-old is hoping to force his back into the selectors' plans for the two-Test series with West Indies, starting at Lord's on May 6.
Owais Shah, the incumbent, is currently away on Indian Premier League duty, while Ian Bell - the man Shah replaced - has already put forward a compelling case for another chance with two centuries for Warwickshire.
Opportunity
"I know exactly what I need to do over the next few weeks, hopefully go out and get a big score," Vaughan told
Sky Sports News.
"I think I've got a great opportunity this week at Durham, playing against probably the best bowling attack in the country.
"With the (sunny) weather, it should be a good pitch. If I can get in and get a score then I hope to knock on the selectors' door.
"I've always batted in the top four (but) I'll play wherever they tell me to.
"Number three is a position I've enjoyed and it's the position I'm playing for Yorkshire at the minute.
"That's the position (in England's Test team) that looks to becoming available.
"Hopefully in the next week or so I can score enough runs to knock on (national selector) Geoff Miller's door and say: 'look I'm available for selection'."
