Northamptonshire beat Somerset by 25 runs
David Sales' beefy innings of 71 off 45 balls helped Northamptonshire to a 25-run victory over Somerset in their opening Twenty20 Cup game at Taunton.
Sales helped himself against the Somerset bowling attack to whack six sixes during his unbeaten innings, which included an 85-run stand with Andrew Hall.
Rob White started the innings off with his knock of 45 off just 20 balls, and he added 44 with Hall - who went on to make an equally muscular 54 from 35.
Sales carried things on and he stayed until the end to help the Steelbacks to record a challenging total of 201-4 from their 20 overs.
Somerset might have been regretting their decision to insert Northants but Marcus Trescothick came out with all guns blazing and was soon putting the visitors to the sword.
Trescothick reached his 50 in just 20 balls and Somerset had reached 66-5 off just five overs with fellow opener Justin Langer making just five.
With the century partnership brought up after 8.1 overs, Somerset were looking good, but then Trescothick went for 69 with the score on 104.
Langer followed shortly as both men went to Jason Brown and that triggered a complete collapse by the Sabres as they swiftly ran out of both wickets and balls to face.
Nicky Boje and Johann Louw both took two wickets each as Peter Trego ran out of support and he eventually hit out for 45 and Somerset could only reach 176-7 and lose by 25 runs.
