New skipper will be hoping to stay afloat in Division One

Stephen Fleming's parting gift to the county was a place back in Division One of the County Championship. The former New Zealand captain ended his highly successful stint with the county by leading them to second spot in both the four-day format and the Pro40 League. Now wicketkeeper Chris Read takes over and is charged with the task of making sure they keep their dual top-flight status. The new captain will not be helped by the fact that two of his key bowlers could be taken away from him. Ryan Sidebottom and new recruit Stuart Broad, who followed his father Chris' footsteps when he signed from Leicestershire, will both be called upon by England throughout the summer. Although their absence will be felt at Trent Bridge, Notts are fortunate to have plenty of options in the bowling department.

Strong squad

Charlie Shreck, a player Fleming himself said should be considered for international honours, and Mark Ealham provide a little and large approach with the new ball. With Paul Franks, Mark Footitt and Andy Harris also available there are plenty of seam options for the skipper. Read will also be able to call upon Graeme Swann, a man who has spent much of his winter on tour carrying drinks. He should be glad to finally get out in the middle to do more than just hand over a bottle of water. Weight of runs was crucial behind Notts' bid for glory in 2007. Although they have lost Jason Gallian, the signing of Matthew Wood fills the hole at the top of the order. David Hussey, now a familiar face with the county, returns after his stint in the Indian Premier League. Compatriot Adam Voges, who has previously played for Hampshire, fills in during his absence. Safety in the four-day game will be good enough for coach Mick Newell and they will have high hopes of a one-day trophy. Big season for: Chris Read - Has some big shoes to fill at Trent Bridge. The diminuitive wicketkeeper will want to put his ICL issues behind him and make an instant impression in charge of a squad that looks to have plenty of depth. One to watch: Mark Footitt - The tall paceman was tipped for big things last year but struggled to break into the first XI. With Sidebottom and Broad likely to be absent, he should get more chances in 2008.
