Change of pace now for Sri Lanka - Senanayake replaces the superb Kulasekara. Perfect time to bowl spin - ever-increasing run-rate and a team four wickets down cheaply. Morgan manages a single down the ground off the final ball, but that's all for England.
A rare England boundary arrives courtesy of a crunching cut shot by Bopara, the Essex batsman gleefully accepting the gift from Prasad. That lifted the WASP back into life - chances of a home victory all the way up to four percent now.
No shock to see Kulasekara carry on. Bopara finally gets off the mark with a nicely-timed drive that Dilshan just catches up with before it reaches the rope, meaning it's three runs for England. Morgan pinches an extra run off the last ball, sneaking a second to third man - the crowd were so impressed they offered a polite round of applause, helping lift them out of a stunned state following that disastrous start by the hosts.
Change in the attack - Dhammika Prasad couldn't ask for a better time to come on. Bet Perera and Lakmal wish they had been fit enough to play today! Prasad has some decent wheels about him - at least he helps England finally get off 29 with a leg-side wide. Morgan also picks up a single with a calculated cut shot down to third man. And so ends a rather eventful opening powerplay, one that started with some easy runs and ended with England in a real fight to remain alive.
Sangakkara up to the stumps now for Kulasekara - good to see, stops the batsmen creeping down the wicket to a swing bowler who can't push someone back with pace. This is EXACTLY what Buttler should do when Bopara has the ball in his hand. Second successive maiden as Sri Lanka tighten the screw - England now need another 228 at a required rate of 5.56. Last four overs have seen three runs added for the loss of two wickets.
Maiden from Malinga, Morgan extremely watchful. Don't forget, England were 17 without loss after 12 balls of their run chase. Cameras catch Peter Moores making notes - or writing his resignation (JOKE - no one writes a resignation letter, do they? We all type them these days...)
Well, so much for 250 looking about par. It looks like a Kilimanjaro-sized mountain right now for England to try and climb. Bopara in during a powerplay, something he's used to these days batting at number six. Probably not, though, when that powerplay is inside the first 10 overs. WASP suggests England have a three percent - THREE PERCENT - chance of winning this match now.
Ballance now gone as well! Kulasekara has trapped him lbw with one that nipped back to hit the front pad. Umpire Erasmus had a think about it before eventually raising his finger. Looked out the moment it struck the batsman.
Morgan off the mark immediately with a couple of runs. Wonder if England's stand-in skipper is looking forward to Cook returning to the job on Wednesday. That Root dismissal, while spectacular with the stump coming up out of the ground, was all about him playing back to a ball he should have been forward to.
ROOT UPROOTED! He's playing down Piccadilly, should've been down Bakerloo. The result is Malinga knocking his off pole out of the ground, leaving England three down and in a whole heap of trouble.
England need a further 231 from the remaining 45 overs - now down to two Yorkshiremen (via Zimbabwe, in Ballance's case) to try and rebuild following the loss of both openers, who each got themselves out in ways they will now be regretting in the pavilion.
And another for Kulasekara! Bell a bit lazy outside off stump, rather wafting the bat at it rather than going with any conviction. All he ends up doing is providing a second catch for Sangakkara behind the stumps, albeit this one much tougher than the first.
A Malinga delivery somehow misses both the inside edge of Bell's bat and the stumps. Not quite sure how it didn't make contact with something on the way through. Ballance gets off the mark from the final ball of the fourth over, getting a gift of a full toss that he simply steers past the cover point fielder.
Carberry on the move when he edged that delivery, getting a thin nick on it. Not what he wanted on a day when he had the opportunity to let his bat doing the talking for him.
Carberry misses out on a good chance to fill his boots, following a delivery pushed across him by Kulasekara that takes the edge and offers wicketkeeper Sangakkara an easy catch.
Bell gets a bit fortunate when an ugly poke (we've all had them early on) takes the edge but falls short of second slip, leaking beyond the fielder for a couple of runs. He looks much better when playing positively, punching Malinga off the back foot for three more. Bell's opening boundary means he is not only England's leading run scorer in ODI cricket on home turf, but also the highest scorer in matches played at Durham Emirates ICG. Malinga over-steps in a pretty poor opening over, allowing Carberry to carve a free hit through the covers for three.
Good start for England, and both openers. Carberry flicks the first ball of the innings through mid-wicket for three, then watches on as Bell cuts the next away off the back foot all the way to the boundary. Kulasekara looks for swing but doesn't find much of it, unless he was looking for it to swing off the bat.
The players head back out to the middle - England need 257 to go 2-0 up in the five-match series. Next match, in case you don't know, is a day-nighter at Lancashire on Wednesday.
No late flourish from the Sri Lankan lower order, meaning they end up setting England 257. Jordan ends with 1-56 from his 10 overs, meaning all three of the home side's frontline seamers took at least one wicket. 20 extras did not help their cause, but that is a total they will hope to chase down in fairly benign batting conditions.
Gurney finishes with figures of 3-59 from his 10 overs. Sri Lanka, though, should still end up making 250.
Another wicket for Gurney, Kulasekara hitting him right out to Root at long-on. Sometimes, bowlers can benefit from being brave enough to be on during the death.
Having hit the previous ball in between the fielders at mid-off and cover for four, Chandimal then picks out the second of those two men to depart for 14. Bopara takes the catch comfortably enough.
Another over that still goes for a few, despite including a wicket. Chandimal takes up the baton after the loss of Priyanjan, smacking an Anderson slower-ball bouncer away for four. The Lancashire bowler should have been pinged for a wide at the end, too. He gets away with it, meaning final figures of 2-38.
Priyanjan's fun is over, Anderson getting him to spoon a pull shot up in the air for Morgan to catch at mid-wicket. That is the 250th ODI scalp for the Burnley Express.
Chandimal gets a single from his first delivery and then watches on as Priyanjan manages to scoop a full toss from Gurney - bowling around the wicket - over backward point and away for a welcome boundary. He does the same to the fifth ball of the over, but Carberry this time manages to catch up with it, saving a single. While they did lose a wicket in the over, the tourists still managed to pick up 10 runs.
Bopara hangs on this time, giving Gurney his first wicket of the day as Mathews chips a simple chance to cover. I say simple, nothing has been easy in the field today for England.
Little gem of a knock here from Priyanjan. He bravely opts to get the reverse scoop out to someone of Jordan's pace, deflecting the ball all along the floor past the short third man. He hit a half-century on his ODI debut having hailed from the same school as his hero, Mahela Jayawardene. England could have seen the back of him when Mathews kicks the ball straight into Jordan's path, but the bowler can't hit the stumps in his follow through.
DROP! England making some errors in the field, a further chance going begging when Bopara spills a simple opportunity out at deep mid-wicket. He did have a problem with his finger before the first ODI - perhaps they've since replaced it with a version made of butter.
Mathews not only locates the middle of his bat (at long last) but also brings up Sri Lanka's 200 with a boundary down the ground to start Jordan's over. He also ends it with a four, though this time simply opening the face to steer the ball past the short third man. The 50 stand is now up for the fifth wicket, and it has only taken this pair 44 balls.
Anderson returns - three more left in his allocation. Priyanjan is moving all around the crease, resulting in a cat-and-mouse game with the bowler over where to aim. Anderson tries to follow him, but ends up giving away a wide as the batsman spots what he's up to. Seven runs from the over, with Sri Lanka clearly now looking to pick up the tempo - eight-an-over from here on in gets them 252.
Just four from Bopara's over, which was a real bag of Bassetts. Thankfully, Buttler is now up to the wicket for the medium-pacer, too. This Sri Lankan pair have now put on 30 at a run-a-ball rate.
England bring back Tredwell - Priyanjan responds by launching him down the ground for six, the ball bouncing on the advertising cushions that now cover up the boundary rope. That was his first maximum in international cricket - his second duly arrives three balls later, this time lifted over mid-wicket. Tredderzzz' last over ends up leaking 16 runs and means he finishes with 1-57.
Not a good over for England in the field. Bopara is left looking at a wicket end after missing a limply-hit drive and giving away two runs, then from the next ball Priyanjan is put down at third man by Gurney. Not an easy catch running in, but he seemed to at one stage have it in his grasp as he slid across the turf. Jordan not impressed - Sri Lanka finish the powerplay having lost just the one wicket, albeit a sizeable one in the form of Dilshan, while adding 24 runs.
Mathews takes a couple of paces down the pitch and has an ugly-looking swipe at Gurney, resulting in the ball travelling all of a yard off bat and pad. The attacking intent came just after David Gower had mentioned Sri Lanka could easily fall away now, looking to put too many on the scoreboard. No need to go too early, particularly as England continue to help them out with wides - they've sent down 11 of them today already.
New man Priyanjan up and running with a single from his second delivery. Mathews also gets a run in the over, and much now depends on him. Dilshan was making what seemed serene progress to a century until Jordan produced a cracker of a delivery to knock him over. No Thisara Perera, remember. He's a miss for the tourists in these closing overs of their innings.
Great wicket for England and Jordan, and not just because it saw the batsman emphatically bowled by a delivery that nipped back in. It was going to take something good to see off Dilshan, and that's exactly what Jordan produced, trimming the bails off with a beauty.
Dilshan is denied a boundary from a pull shot that Bell does well to cut off on the leg side, but no fielder can stop the following ball reach the rope when an upper cut off Gurney goes for four.
And so we move into the batting powerplay. Sri Lanka have left it as late as possible, but can wait no more. Jordan's first over back into the attack during the restrictions gives up four runs off the bat, but also two wides. Dilshan calls for a quick single and then sticks in a dive to make sure he beats Bopara's throw, which is off target anyways. Still, at least he bothered - had Jayawardene done the same he would probably still be batting now.
England now bring a sixth bowler into the equation, turning to spinner Root (see what I did there? Did you? DID YOU????). He's around the wicket to both right-handers, who only manage one single from the final over before drinks. Dilshan is obviously a forgiving man, allowing a looping full toss from the Yorkshireman to just be flicked to short fine leg for nothing. That should have been sent over Lumley Castle, the delivery was that bad Root might even have offered an apology.
Bopara back on - England trying to get his the last few remaining overs of his quota out of the way as early as possible. Good plan, but it's rather ruined when the bowler drops in a half-tracker to Dilshan. He duly dispatches it to backward square leg for four.
Poor work from both Dilshan and Jayawardene with the running between the wickets (and also from me for initially putting the wrong batsman being out), the latter not even bothering to stick a dive in to try and save himself. England have rather been gifted two wickets and are suddenly the team on top.
Well, what lazy, lazy running from Jayawardene. Dilshan gets a thick edge trying to cut Tredwell and then calls for a third run. Ballance is aware to what is happening, launching a good throw after a diving stop. Buttler casually takes the bails off and with Jayawardene running in an equally casual manner, he's caught short of his crease.
Anderson back on now - England sensing a chance to really set back Sri Lanka's innings with a couple of quick wickets. Jayawardene gets off the mark with a single into an area at square leg where there is no fielder, the man instead out on the boundary. Athers suggests that's too easy for Mahela to manipulate the bowling and get off strike. Sri Lanka's run-rate now at 4.13.
That wicket came out of nothing - the second-wicket partnership was worth 96 and Sri Lanka were the side on top. You could see Sangakkara was fuming with his shot before Buttler even pouched the ball in his gloves.
So much for Tredwell not looking dangerous. He tosses one right up above Sangakkara's eye-line and the left-hander can't resist. All he ends up doing, though, is slog-sweeping the ball straight up in the air. Buttler tells all his team-mates to get out of the way to take the simple catch.
Gurney bowls wide outside off, Sangakkara does his best to try and provide a nick behind. In the end the umpire gets bored of the game between the two, singling for a wide. Six overs gone now for Gurney, England might want to leave him there to keep a few in reserve for later. Jordan has only bowled four so far, with the other two frontline seamers having done half-a-dozen apiece.
THE SUN IS NOW OUT! That's a bit more like it, the Emirates basking in that yellow thing in the sky we all thought had disappeared faster than a low full toss in the IPL. Tredwell now through seven overs for 34 but, crucially, hasn't got a wicket to his name. If you're frontline spinner isn't posing a real threat, perhaps there's not a lot of point in picking him.
Sangakkara gives Gurney the charge, then ends up having an ugly swipe across the line as the bowler spots his movement and bangs it in short. Ends up with him taking a blow on the elbow. Good comeback over from the left-armer, but no wicket for England.
Very slow and tempting from Tredwell. He repairs a little of the damage done to his figures by giving up just three runs, but England are in need of a breakthrough really. With that in mind, Morgan is going to turn back to Gurney. Bopara takes a break having bowled seven overs at the expense of 29 runs.
Bopara concedes his first boundary when, at long, long last, Dilshan gets the trademark scoop shot out. He hits it perfectly, ramping a full, straight delivery up and over wicketkeeper Buttler. An easy seven from the over and Sri Lanka now have all the ones. This second-wicket stand now worth a mighty fine 78.
Dilshan reaches his 35th half-century with a single on the leg side. It's been a day of milestones for the opener - earlier he became just the fifth Sri Lankan to reach 15,000 international runs (feel free to have a guess at the other four, shouldn't be that tough). Outfield so sluggish that when Sangakkara lifts Tredwell over the top again, the ball doesn't even have enough on it to reach the rope. Still, the two runs make it seven from the over, 18 from Tredwell's last two.
Dilshan closing in on a half-century. Sri Lanka closing in on three figures. Weather closing in on Durham Emirates ICG. Looks extremely dark, as if the world might end in the very near future.
Boundaries for both players in the Tredwell over, suggesting they're going to look to attack the spinner now. Dilshan rocks back to cut his away through cover point, while Sangakkara impressively uses his feet to come down the wicket and lift the offie over the man at mid-on. 11 from the over, giving Morgan some food for thought.
Gasps from the crowd when Carberry acrobatically dives in an attempt to catch a Sangakkara cut shot. Nowhere near it, despite getting a fair distance off the floor with his leap. The pair of runs takes the second-wicket stand for Sri Lanka through to 50. Sangakkara is left fuming when the last ball of the over isn't called a wide - he had advanced down the pitch before leaving it outside off, something he couldn't do if Buttler was up to the stumps. Forget WASP, I've got a bee in my bonnet over that.
Just a solitary single off the third over of spin from Tredwell, Sangakkara getting it. He's gone for nine now off his 18 deliveries, while Bopara has leaked 15 from his four overs. England fiddling through as many as possible while Sri Lanka are going along at such a sedate pace. Six-an-over from here on in gets the tourists 253.
"No real panic yet," says Russel Arnold on commentary. While these two are still there and building a foundation, Sri Lanka will be happy enough with their progress. Their cause is helped when Sangakkara cashes in on some width from Bopara to cut away for three. It would have been two runs, but Anderson's relayed throw on the slide to a team-mate was wayward. To be honest, he could've just held on to the ball himself and thrown it in. Sometimes modern methods aren't always better.
Tredwell bowling with plenty of flight - four from an over that sees him try and tempt Sri Lanka's batsmen into an ill-disciplined shot. So far, they are not willing to take the bait.
Bopara continues - crowd get a little excited when Dilshan drives a bump ball to Morgan at cover. You'd think by now they would realise when the ball has bounced. Potential maiden disappeared when Tillakaratne whips a couple of runs through mid-wicket.
Time for some spin in the form of Tredwell. Field relaxed a little, but Morgan has kept a slip in place. That fielder is nearly in the action twice off Sangakkara, the first occasion seeing the left-hander fail to get an edge. When he does make contact with his bat, the ball squirts past the diving catcher and away for a couple. Time for some DRINKS in Durham - tea and coffee might be the order of the day.
Sangakkara runs a single, though only because he gets halfway down the track before being sent back by Dilshan. A direct hit from Bopara running around from point and Sri Lanka would have been two down. Instead this partnership is now worth 29, Dilshan helping add four to it when he swivels on a short ball from Jordan and pulls it away perfectly in between the two fielders in the deep.
Buttler standing back to Bopara - helmet right there behind him but the wicketkeeper seems happy enough where he is. If this was a county match with Essex and RavBops was bowling, James Foster wouldn't have even hesitated in being up to those stumps. Dilshan gets two with a poorly-timed pull that is eventually dealt with by two fielders at backward square leg. Sri Lanka currently heading for a total of 190 at this current rate, but most importantly they have only lost the one wicket to England's frontline seam trio.
Sangakkara quickly picks up on an over-pitched delivery from Jordan, driving the paceman through the covers for his first boundary of the day. The response from the bowler was as typical as ever, a bouncer that is easily avoided by the left-hander.
Anderson off - Ravi Bopara on in his place. Pressure eases a little now off the tourists, with England's other frontline option being spinner Tredwell. Days like this they could do with a Ben Stokes (who is due to play for Durham this week) in their line-up, offering a fourth frontline seamer to exploit the conditions. A boundary for Sri Lanka comes in Bopara's first over, albeit off Sangakkara's thigh pad. Doesn't matter to them, they'll take runs anyway they come right now.
Sangakkara takes a risk with a quick single to mid-off, pushing and running before realising it's Eoin Morgan there. The stand-in skipper rushes in and under-arms a throw as he launches into a Superman dive, but his effort is just off target and Kumar survives. Sri Lanka having to take a risk or two to keep the scoreboard ticking, though England's seamers are occasionally helping them out with wides. Already five extras in the innings.
Sangakkara gets off the mark with one to square leg and there are a pair of singles for Dilshan, who has looked fairly comfortable at the crease, despite both his injury and the bowler-friendly conditions. He does have a dart at an Anderson bouncer but makes contact with nothing but fresh air. Sri Lanka's run-rate currently at 3.36.
Change in the attack for England - Chris Jordan on in place of Gurney. Good opening over from the Sussex man, leaking just a single to Dilshan down to fine leg, as the dark clouds begin to encroach on the ground. First 10 overs finished, meaning the mandatory powerplay is all done and dusted. Occasional moments of aggression mixed with solid foundations.
So the ninth over finishes with a wicket, Thirimanne having offered just one real stroke of menace during his rather stodgy knock of 10. Mind you, what a shot it was! Kumar Sangakkara now in at a ground he knows well following a spell with Durham not so long ago.
WICKET! England get their first breakthrough, Thirimanne finally flirting once too often outside his off stump. Anderson finds his outside edge and James Tredwell and second slip duly takes the comfortable chance at about knee height.
THIRIMANNNNNNNE! Having taken up the role of Brigadier Block in honour of Durham skipper Paul Collingwood, the left-hander suddenly shows a sign of aggression as he lamps Gurney over mid-wicket for the first maximum of the day. Everyone, crowd included, seemed a little stunned by that shot. It's back to normal after that, with a single off the last taking him into double figures.
Dilshan drives Anderson through the mid-on region for a trio of runs, should have only been one at best but the fielder (Root) made a bit of a mess getting down to stop a shot that while firmly hit, should not have gone that far beyond him. Like watching two different games as Thirimanne continues to struggle around. At least he's got another single to his name, a glide to third man helping make it five runs from the over.
Gurney ends his third over with a beauty to Thirimanne - it moves away from the left-hander very late, beating his defensive prod and resulting in him crabbing his back leg around, leaving him squared up with his bat hanging out to dry. Polite round of applause for the seamer for that ball, crowd beginning to fill up for what is the only international match at the venue this summer.
From the 18th ball he's faced, Thirimanne finally gets off the mark with a single towards fine leg after riding a short ball from Anderson. The Burnley Express briefly gets excited when he hits the pads of Dilshan to finish his third over, only there's no hope of ever getting an lbw decision. Too high and probably doing too much, as well. Seam movement for Anderson, not a lot of swing through the air though. WASP now rising...264.
Better over for Sri Lanka, who have correctly taken a good look at the pitch in the early going. Dilshan punishes Gurney for being over-pitched, driving down the ground for the game's first boundary. He gets four more with a drive again in the over, though this time smacks a drive to the right of mid-off. A single off the fifth delivery means he has the strike, too.
The average score in the last 10 ODIs in Durham is 246. The WASP has been set, though, at 250. Dilshan keeps testing out his injury with scampered singles. He's got two from three so far, while Thirimanne has still yet to get off the mark from the 15 legal deliveries he has faced.
After Harry Gurney starts his spell with a wide, Sri Lanka finally manage to add to their total by using the willow. Dilshan is the man to get it, dropping a defensive shot into the mid-wicket region and then quickly calling his partner through for one. So far there's been movement in the air but a lack of pace off the pitch. The Sri Lankans were hurried the other day at the Oval, yet this surface should be a little more easy to cope with anything short.
Couple of wides in the opening over from James Anderson, but also a cracker to the left-handed Thirimanne that moves away and beats the outside edge. He has two slips there waiting for a chance, but as yet none forthcoming. Sri Lanka still yet to manage a run off the bat.
"It's cold and it is slightly damp," says Nick Knight. That's not the description of the North East weather but the pitch, which looks primed for the seamers to shine (even if the sun doesn't want to). Despite all that, he thinks 250 is a possible score. Reckon Sri Lanka would be fairly happy with that in three or so hours.
No, it's not a problem with reading maps or working out where to be. Sri Lanka have been forced to make two enforced changes for this match, bringing in Dhammika Prasad and Ashan Priyanjan for injured pair Suranga Lakmal and Thisara Perera. Tillerkaratne Dilshan has, though, passed a fitness test and is there at the top of the visitors' batting order.
So with Cook crocked, Michael Carberry gets the chance to open the innings alongside Ian Bell. England had called up Alex Hales on Saturday as cover, but resisted the temptation to make the majority of their fans happy by selecting him.
The news from the middle is that Sri Lanka have lost the toss and given England the chance to bowl first, on a day that is fairly murky and overcast currently. Of course, the bigger news is that Alastair Cook wasn't the one tossing the coin - the England skipper is out with that groin injury, so Eoin Morgan is leading the hosts.
