Ashwin beats Morgan with some neat spin, with the ball just missing the edge on the way through to Dhoni. Just two singles come from the over as the required run rate continues to sky-rocket.
New man Ben Stokes gets off the mark first ball to end his run of four ducks against India but there is no real signs of improvement in the scoring rate as only three come from the over.
Morgan runs a single before Buttler is beaten by the spin of Ashwin and loops the easiest of catches to Kohli at short cover. This is quickly turning into an impossible task for the hosts.
Ashwin continues and gets some turn in to Buttler, who is forced to see out three dot balls before scampering a single. Morgan adds another run before the over is out.
Jos Buttler is the new man in and he drives uppishly towards short extra cover, but the ball does not quite reach Kohli. The wicketkeeper gets off the mark with a single next ball.
Spin from both ends now as Ravindra Jadeja comes on. Hales and Morgan trade singles before the former tries to sweep the bowler away but only succeeds in sending a top-edge high into the air, with Ashwin taking a simple catch at short fine leg.
Ashwin continues and is driven towards long-on for a single by Hales before Morgan top-edges him wide of backward point and away to the boundary for four runs. Morgan then blocks out the rest of the over. England are quite a way behind on the D/L calculations should the rain intervene at some point soon.
Mohit pitches one up to Morgan, who drills the ball back past the bowler and down the ground for four. Mohit then tidies up his length and Morgan cannot get anything away for the rest of the over.
We see some spin now as Ravi Ashwin is brought into the attack for the first time. Morgan works him away for a single before Hales' sweep into the on side is half-stopped at square leg, preventing a possible boundary. Hales and Morgan grab a single each to complete the over.
Mohit is brought back on after the drinks break and puts some pressure on Hales after two superb stops in the field prevent the batsman from getting off strike. The situation does not change for the whole over as Mohit completes a maiden.
Hales tries to cut Kumar away but whiffs again. He then tries to run a quick single into the off side and a diving Morgan is saved at the striker's end when Rahane cannot find the direct hit. Morgan gets off the mark by running two from the final ball of the over.
There is a huge appeal from Shami as the ball clips off Hales and behind to Dhoni, but replays back up Illingworth's ruling that there was contact with the thigh pad and not the bat. Hales eventually runs a single and Shami rips another one past the edge of Morgan.
Eoin Morgan is the new man in and almost pays the price for hanging his edge out to the last delivery of Kumar's over.
Hales grabs a single to bring Root on strike and Kumar removes the in-form batsman with an an absolute jaffa! The ball nips in off the seam, going through the gate and clattering into the stumps. India are flying at the moment.
Shami really has his tail up now as he skips one just past the edge of Hales before finding an outside edge which so nearly carries to point. Hales eventually manages to get off strike and Root ends the over with a fine drive square of the wicket for four runs.
Hales survives an lbw shout from Kumar as the ball was heading down the leg side. Just one run comes from the over as Hales and Root try to calm things down.
The wicket fell with the last ball of the over so Joe Root will head to the non-striker's end for now.
Second wicket of the over! New man Ian Bell and Hales traded singles before the former shouldered arms at a straight one from Shami and was powerless to prevent the ball cannoning into his off stump. England's good start is being undone in dramatic fashion.
Cook walks a long way across his stumps to Shami and is trapped on the pads plumb in front. Richard Illingworth's finger goes up and the England captain is gone! The only doubt was whether or not it pitched outside leg stump - Hawk Eye says it did by a smidgeon.
Cook begins Kumar's over with two boundaries, the first extremely fortunate as he sends and inside edge perilously close to his stumps and down to long leg, but the second an anything-but-lucky cover drive right out of the middle of bat. There are no further runs from the rest of the over.
Cook runs two leg byes before grabbing a single after sending an edge between backward point and gully. Hales then swings and misses outside off stump again but recovers to run two more twos before the end of the over.
Hales' inconsistent driving continues as he whiffs at a full delivery from Mohit but he quickly puts that behind him by pulling the bowler away to the deep square leg boundary for four. He then produces a peach of a cover drive to send the ball racing away to the ropes for another four. Nine runs come from the over in total, with Hales changing his bat after his original one gets cracked.
Mohammed Shami comes on and makes an inauspicious start as he bowls two wides down the leg side. Cook then runs a single before Hales again leaves one which just about misses his off stump. The new boy ends the over in style as he drives through the covers off the back foot for his third four of the day.
After a Hales single, Cook pulls Mohit upishly towards mid-on but it drops just short of the fielder. The bowler follows up by almost finding Cook's edge for a third time and in the end concedes just two runs from the over as Cook chops away another single.
Kumar leaves two deliveries from Kumar before stepping forward and drilling him through the covers for four runs. He tries something similar next ball but is lucky to escape with his wicket as he edges just wide of backward point. The resulting single brings Cook on strike and he stays put after a big lbw shout is turned down on the grounds of height.
Mohit continues his good line and length to Cook, the left-hander unable to get anything off until the fourth ball, which he slices down to third man for a single. Hales keeps the strike rotating with a quick single before Cook blocks the last ball of the over.
Hales drives through the covers off the back foot for two but looks less assured when he edges wide of the slips and down to the third-man boundary for four. Two dot balls follow before Hales opts to leave one which comes close to hitting his off stump.
Mohit Sharma takes the other new ball as Alex Hales' first ball in one-day international cricket produces a quick single to cover. He then fizzes one just past the edge of Cook and, after two more dot balls, goes even closer to the outside of the England captain's bat as Cook just gets inside the line. Good opening over from Mohit.
Kumar's line strays towards leg stump and Cook takes advantage to whip him away for two runs on three separate occasions. The bowler eventually tidies things up and the final two deliveries of the over are dot balls.
The weather has cleared and the players are now back out in the middle for the start of England's innings. England have been set a revised target of 295 in 47 overs.
It looks like the rain is passing over and, unless any more falls, we will get things back under way at 3.30pm BST.
...And the covers are now coming on, with the players heading off the field due to the rain.
The two teams were just making their way out for the start of England's innings but some light rain has started to fall and the umpires are currently deciding whether play should start or not.
So after a shaky start, India edge into the driver's seat thanks to an incredible fifth-wicket stand of 144 in 16.5 overs from Raina and Dhoni. The tourists may well have gone on to score even more if that duo had stayed in until the end but England still have some hope given the wicket is a good one for batting.
Jordan is somewhat surprisingly chosen to bowl the last over and his first ball is scooped away over his own shoulder by Ashwin for four runs. The second is prodded away for a single and the third is a full toss which Jadeja drives to deep cover for one more run. The fourth is an attempted heave into the on side by Ashwin but it ends up as an edge down to third man for four. One leg bye comes from the penultimate ball while the final delivery is edged over the head of Buttler and away for two runs.
Ravi Ashwin comes to the crease and gets off the mark straight away before Jadeja grabs two more.
Jadeja runs a single and Dhoni grabs two before the latter tries to heave one down the ground, but he misjudges the pace on Woakes' delivery and is bowled through the gate.
Anderson is back on and tempts Dhoni into a big swing and a miss before the India captain runs a single. Jadeja then charges down the wicket but Anderson has it scouted, while another dot ball follows. Jadeja pulls away a single before Dhoni lofts one over mid-off to run two and bring up his fifty.
Ravindra Jadeja is the new man in and he runs a leg bye from the first ball that he faces, while Dhoni grabs two singles. A well-run two from Jadeja then completes the over.
Raina decides to have a slog and is caught by Anderson at deep cover, ending a brilliant innings of 100 from just 75 balls. The SWALEC gives him a standing ovation as he walks off.
Jordan comes back into the attack but has he pulled himself together? His first ball is a full toss that is driven away for a single and his second also reaches the batsman on the full, with Raina guiding it away towards midwicket to bring up his century! Dhoni then misjudges a yorker and is caught well out of his ground, but Jordan cannot hit the stumps from close range. A wild delivery is then edged away for four by Dhoni before the skipper flicks one in the air towards deep square leg, but Stokes cannot take a diving catch and the ball bounces away from him for four. The dreaded wide follows before he finishes the over with dot ball.
Woakes comes back into the attack and is pulled away for one by Raina, who continues to march towards his century. Dhoni then works two more past square leg before Woakes bounces one tamely down the leg side for a wide. Another single brings Raina on strike and he takes one more to put him a run away from the century. Woakes then bowls another wide down the leg side, Dhoni takes a single and Raina clips two down to fine leg, but they are given as leg byes and he is denied the hundred for now.
Dhoni cuts Tredwell away through the off side for four runs before two more singles keep the scoreboard ticking over. The spinner then finishes his over - and his bowling allocation for the day - with two dot balls.
Stokes continues as India takes two singles from the first two balls of the over. Raina then smacks a drive through the covers and then one down the ground for two consecutive fours. The left-hander is timing the ball expertly today and two more - courtesy of a misfield from Woakes - takes him well into the 90s.
[6]Tredwell comes back on and straight away Raina walks down the wicket and smacks him down the ground for six runs. The spinner limits the damage by conceding just three more from the next five balls but it is still a good over for India.
Jordan is unsurprisingly taken out of the attack, with Stokes coming back on. Dhoni slices a scruffy drive over extra cover and away to the ropes for four and, after the batsmen trade singles, he swipes another one down the ground for four more. Another good over for the tourists.
Anderson is back on and stems the flow of runs by starting his over with two dot balls before Dhoni flicks him away for a single. Raina then lofts a four over backward square leg before edging a short ball away to long leg for another four. A third straight four follows as Raina drives a full delivery beautifully through the covers. India have turned this innings around by taking 62 from the powerplay and they still have the last 10 overs to come.
Dhoni gets in on the act, driving Jordan through the covers for four before the bowler sends another wide down the leg side. Three more singles are followed by Jordan's eighth wide before Raina guides the bowler down to third man for another run. Jordan then bowls three more wides down the leg side as the problem quickly turns into a full-blown crisis, but finally manages to complete the over with a optimistic lbw appeal. Another costly over for England with 13 coming from it, five of which were wides.
Woakes pitches it up to Raina and is blasted straight back down the ground for a big six. A single gives Raina his fifty and another brings him back on strike. The left-hander top-edges a pull but gets enough on it to loop it over the rope for another six before flicking two perfectly-timed strokes away through the off side, one for two and one all the way to the ropes for four. A massive over for India, who take 20 runs from it.
Jordan is back on and is immediately cut away through the off side for four runs by Raina. The batsmen then trade singles before Raina deals well with a short ball, guiding it away down to fine leg for a single. A leg by and another single bring the total to nine from the over.
The batting powerplay begins as Woakes is brought back into the attack, conceding two singles from his first three balls. Dhoni then takes two runs after an overthrow by Cook from short extra cover and two further singles make it six from the over.
Raina tries to drive Anderson through the covers but instead inside edges the ball behind the wicket, with the ball evading Buttler behind the stumps and racing away for four. Anderson then begins the expected short-ball barrage of Raina but when he switches back to a good length the left-hander cuts him away for four more runs.
Raina and Dhoni combine to take just three runs from Tredwell's eighth over as the spinner continues to do his job well.
Anderson is brought back into the attack now and concedes a boundary with his second ball as Raina turns one around the corner and down to long leg for four. There is just one run from the remainder, however, as Anderson keeps things tidy.
England go up for a huge lbw appeal as Raina tries to sweep Tredwell. Reiffel turns it down but Hawk Eye throws up three reds, meaning it should have been given out. As it is Raina remains at the crease and three runs come from the over.
Raina flicks Jordan away for a single before Eoin Morgan makes a brilliant diving stop at backward point to prevent Dhoni getting off the mark. The India captain does eventually get going with a single, with Jordan throwing in two more wides before the over is out.
Skipper MS Dhoni is the new man in and he sees out four dot balls, meaning Tredwell gets a wicket maiden.
Rohit gets itchy feet to Tredwell and attempts to charge down the wicket and hit him for six, but he only succeeds in picking out Woakes at long-off. A very disappointing dismissal after he had done so well to reach his half-century.
Jordan is brought back into the attack and concedes two singles off his first three balls before bouncing a wide well down the leg side. Two flicks down the leg side from Raina and Rohit make it five runs from the over.
Tredwell bowls three dot balls before Raina heaves him into the leg side, with the ball reaching the ropes for four runs. There is just one other run from the over.

Tredwell continues and concedes just two runs from his fourth over as India try to build again after the loss of that wicket.
Stokes starts with three dot balls to Rohit before batsman runs a single and then Raina whips the bowler away through midwicket to get off the mark with an impressive four.
Suresh Raina is the new man in and he sees out the last ball of Tredwell's over without scoring.
Tredwell comes round the wicket to the pair of right-handers and concedes three singles before spinning one past Rahane's edge, with Buttler taking the ball and appealing for a stumping. The wicketkeeper is very confident as it goes to the third umpire, with replays showing the batsmen may not have his foot back in time. It is very, very close but in the end it is ruled that Rahane's back foot was on the line rather than behind it and England have another wicket.
Stokes comes back into the attack and also concedes four singles as India keep the scoreboard turning over at a healthy rate.
India bring up the 100 as Rohit guides Tredwell away for a single. For the second over in succession a total of four singles are scored.
Root continues and concedes a single to Rahane after a misfield from Cook. A good diving stop from Root prevents any runs from the next ball but three more singles make it four from the over.
James Tredwell takes the ball for his first over of the day. India keep things ticking over as they run a single off his first four deliveries before a slip from Root at gully allows them to run two from the fifth ball. Another single from the last ball makes it seven from the over.
Root deceives everyone, including Buttler, with one that goes straight on and the batsmen run a bye. After two more singles Rohit cuts one away through backward point and it beats the despairing and somewhat comical dive of Jordan to reach the ropes for four.
Jordan continues and concedes a quick single to Rohit before Rahane guides him down the ground for four runs. Rahane then dabs him into the off side for another single to make it six from the over.
England turn to Joe Root as their first spinner from the River Taff end. India take three runs from his first three balls, as the field is put back onto the boundary, but only one more single from the second half of the over.
The batting duo are finding their touch now as Rahane strokes Jordan away through the covers for another four. Rahane then runs a single before Jordan sends two wides down the leg side. The bowler eventually tightens up his line and ends the over with a hopeful lbw shout but it is quickly turned down. Rohit and Rahane have passed the fifty partnership for the fourth wicket.
Rahane and Rohit take a single each off Stokes before the bowler oversteps for a no-ball to give India a free hit. Rohit lofts the free shot up over square leg and beyond the ropes for the first six of the innings. Maximum punishment for England as Rohit runs two more before the over is out.
Jordan finds an uppish inside edge off Rahane but there is no fielder in the vicinity and the ball trickles away to the ropes for four. A single hands the strike to Rohit, who charges down the ground and tries to drive Jordan but misses the ball, or does he? England go up for a massive appeal but Paul Reiffel says there was no edge and the technology seems to agree with him.
Anderson is also brought out of the attack with Ben Stokes his replacement. He begins with two dot balls before Rohit runs a single and Rahane leans on an on-drive which speeds away to the boundary for four. One more single comes from the rest of the over.
England make their first bowling change as Chris Jordan comes on to replace Anderson. The batsmen trade singles before Jordan bowls a wide down the leg side and then a deflection off the pads to fine leg allows Rahane to run two leg byes.
Anderson continues into a sixth over. Rohit charges down the wicket at him and although he does not hit his drive cleanly he gets enough on it to send it racing past mid-on and away to the boundary for four. He then runs two before displaying much better timing to thread a cover drive through the gap and away to the ropes for another four. Ten runs come from the over.
Woakes continues and begins his fifth over with three dot balls to Rohit. That run ends when the right-hander pushes him past backward point for a single. A good piece of fielding from Bell then prevents another run and the powerplay finishes with just 26 scored.
Rohit runs a single and Rahane grabs two more before Anderson sprays a wide well down the leg side, yielding a total of four runs from the over as India look to recover.
Ajinkya Rahane is sent in at No 4. He flicks Woakes into the leg side for two runs to get off the mark.
Virat Kohli is the new man in and he defends a couple before opening up his body and smashing Woakes straight into the hands of Cook at extra cover. A disastrous over for India as Kohli's miserable tour continues.
Dhawan possibly feels like he is starting to hit his stride and has a big swipe at the first ball of Woakes' fourth over but only succeeds in sending a thin edge behind the stumps to Buttler. England have the breakthrough!
Dhawan grabs a single off Anderson before Rohit pushes into the off side and races through for another hurried single. Ian Bell slipped when running round to short cover and could have had a chance of a run out otherwise. Dhawan then whips one through the gap at midwicket to send the ball bouncing away for India's third boundary of the day and a leg bye follows off the final delivery.
Woakes continues and sees Dhawan again come close to edging onto his stumps. A good yorker keeps the pressure on the batsman before he manages to get off strike with a single, which proves to be the only run from the over.
Rohit sends a thick edge down to third man for one run before Dhawan runs a quick single off Anderson. Those prove to be the only runs from the over as the most notable of the remaining action sees the ball get stuck in the top of Rohit's pad after an inside edge.
Dhawan comes perilously close to chopping Woakes onto his stumps and then India have another lucky escape when Rohit comes down the wicket for a run only to be sent back. He is really scrambling for his ground but wicketkeeper Jos Buttler cannot get his throw off in time and the tourists survive without damage. Dhawan, like Rohit in the previous over, plays and misses at one before connecting well to cut one away square of the wicket for four.
India get off the mark as Anderson sends a wide down the leg side but soon after the bowler is getting more noticeable movement through the air. Rohit has a fish at one outside off stump but cannot connect before finally getting his bat on one at the end of the over, punching an on-drive back past the bowler and away to the boundary for four runs.
Chris Woakes takes the other new ball. Woakes angles four balls across the left-handed Dhawan, which the batsman decides to leave well alone, before he has a prod at the fifth delivery and is lucky not to send an edge behind. The last ball is directed into Dhawan's body, there is no run and it is another maiden over.
Anderson gets some movement early on as he swings one past the edge of Rohit. He does the same again twice more later in the over and otherwise keeps a good line and length to produce a maiden over.
So England's one-day international series with India belatedly gets under way. James Anderson will bowl first with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma at the crease.
We are just five minutes away from the start of play in the second one-day international in Cardiff. India will bat first.
