•

    Over 27 - Ind 110/4 (Raina 16, Karthik 20)

Herath takes over from an off colour Malinga. A succession of paddle sweeps yields singles, by India require more than just singles from this point.

  •

    Over 26 - Ind 106/4 (Raina 14, Karthik 18)

A stumping appeal is sent upstairs in what can only be described as a waist of time. I don't understand why the umpire at square-leg can no longer make any decision on his own. Five wides brings up the 100 for India. A short ball is nicely cut by Raina, who helps himself to four runs.

  •

    Over 25 - Ind 95/4 (Raina 9, Karthik 17)

Malinga continues to the two very conservative batsmen. The Indian's look as if they are having a middle practise. The required rate has now touched 10 runs an over.

  •

    Over 24 - Ind 90/4 (Raina 8, Karthik 13)

A rare miss-field gifts India a run. Runs are coming too few and far between as the batsmen are now struggling to even rotate the strike.

  •

    Over 23 - Ind 88/4 (Raina 7, Karthik 12)

After a couple expensive overs, Malinga bowls a tight one. The pressure will build rapidly now as the required run rate is soaring.

  •

    Over 22 - Ind 87/4 (Raina 7, Karthik 11)

Senanayake comes back into the attack. A quiet over should give the spinner some confidence after previously being hit out of the attack by Vijay.

  •

    Over 21 - Ind 84/4 (Raina 6, Karthik 9)

Malinga starts his second over by spraying 5 wides down the leg-side. It is surprising that it doesn't happen more often, considering his action. He finds his radar and the batsmen find scoring tough. Raina caps the over by playing a lovely cover drive to the boundary.

  •

    Over 20 - Ind 74/4 (Raina 2, Karthik 8)

Mathews tests out Raina with the short ball. He hooks it for a single and gets away from the danger end. If nothing else, India will be looking to get their middle order in form for the rest of this series.

  •

    Over 19 - Ind 70/4 (Raina 1, Karthik 5)

Malinga comes on for his first burst. If he gets his tail up, he could role through this batting order. the bowler starts a little too straight and is worked into the leg-side. WICKET. He gets it right third ball and bowls Vijay with a superb yorker. A full toss is clipped for four to end the over.

  •

    Over 18 - Ind 62/3 (Vijay 28, Karthik 0)

Mathews is consistently hitting a great length. It is proving very difficult to create any pace off the bat on this slow pitch. The batsmen are finding it tough to survive, let alone score at the require rate which is near 9 an over now.

  •

    Over 17 - Ind 58/3 (Vijay 25, Karthik 0)

Herath continues to a more circumspect looking Vijay after the fall of a couple quick wickets. The spinner is does what he does best, simply bowling a tight line and length.

  •

    Over 16 - Ind 57/3 (Vijay 24, Karthik 0)

Mathews brings himself back into the attack, and there is still no sign of Malinga. WICKET. The captain has got rid of the danger man. Kohli hooks a bouncer and is caught by Malinga at fine-leg.

  •

    Over 15 - Ind 54/2 (Vijay 22, Kohli 1)

After surviving a close appeal, Vijay runs down the wicket and hits a single to long-off. WICKET. Dhawan swings the ball straight to the deep mid-wicket where he is comfortably caught. Herath has made the beak through. Kohli arrives at the wicket, he doesn't mind scoring runs against Sri Lanka.

  •

    Over 14 - Ind 51/1 (Vijay 20, Dhawan 24)

A fine lap sweep brings Vijay a boundary. A belligerent cover drives gives Vijay another boundary. he looks to have finally found his feet.

  •

    Over 13 - Ind 41/1 (Vijay 11, Dhawan 23)

Vijay advances and hits Herath over cover, earning two runs. The over is worked around nicely, yielding six runs. This is the sort of over India would want in order to build a platform from which they can launch.

  •

    Over 12 - Ind 35/1 (Vijay 7, Dhawan 22)

The off-spinner is showing his full array of variations early in his spell. Singles are starting to come, but the required run rate is steadily climbing.

  •

    Over 11 - Ind 30/1 (Vijay 5, Dhawan 20)

Herath comes into the attack. If the batsmen refuse to show any intent, then these two spinners will squeeze the life out of this innings. A good start for the Sri Lankan left-arm spinner as he concedes just two runs.

  •

    Over 10 - Ind 28/1 (Vijay 4, Dhawan 19)

Spin comes into the attack in the form of Senanayake. A good opening over flies by, in which very little intent is being shown by the batsmen.

  •

    Over 9 - Ind 26/1 (Vijay 3, Dhawan 18)

Kulasekara is shown some faith, as he starts another over. Some energetic fielding helps to restrict the runs. the over is another good one for the fielding team as it costs just 1 run.

  •

    Over 8 - Ind 25/1 (Vijay 3, Dhawan 17)

Mathews starts another over and will look to make up for his teammates previous over. A mixed bag of variation does the trick as Mathews produces a maiden.

  •

    Over 7 - Ind 25/1 (Vijay 3, Dhawan 17)

Kulasekara drops a touch short and is pulled for four by Dhawan. The Indian's are showing some urgency by taking a number of quick singles. This is a good way to shift the pressure. Width this time is punished as Dhawan helps himself to another boundary.

  •

    Over 6 - Ind 15/1 (Vijay 2, Dhawan 7)

Dhawan advances in an attempt to hit Mathews of his wonderful length. The bowler however is not phased and continues to apply the pressure.

  •

    Over 5 - Ind 13/1 (Vijay 1, Dhawan 6)

WICKET. Rohit is caught by the skipper off the bowling of Kulasekara. Rohit tried to force the issue but the ball hit the toe of the bat again and only went as far as short mid-wicket. Vijay is the new man to the crease.

  •

    Over 4 - Ind 12/0 (Rohit 5, Dhawan 6)

The batsmen have started slowly, which has already pushed up the required run rate. It is however the right way to go, because if India were to lose early wickets, it would be game over. Mathews has started well, consistently hitting a good length. A very good stroke, hiting the ball on the rise through the covers gets Dhawan off and running.

  •

    Over 3 - Ind 6/0 (Rohit 4, Dhawan 1)

The pitch looks slow and low all of a sudden. The toe of the bat is being hit regularly as the batsmen struggle for timing.

  •

    Over 2 - Ind 2/0 (Rohit 1, Dhawan 1)

The skipper has decided to share the duty of opening the bowling. This will give Malinga more overs to bowl in the batting power play and at the death. A steady start earns the captain a maiden.

  •

    Over 1 - Ind 2/0 (Rohit 1, Dhawan 1)

kulasekara immediately gets a little in drift to the right-handed Rohit. The bowler will fancy his chances of finding the outside edge of the left-handed Dhawan. A tidy start costs the bowler just 2 runs.

  •

    End of innings

After being inserted, Sri Lanka batted beautifully. Lead initially by a Jayawardene 100 and then taken home by Tharanga who finished on 174 not out. The massive target of 349 will give Sri Lanka a better than good chance of doing what they have not managed to achieve for quite some time, defeat India.

  •

    Over 50 - Sri 348/1 (Tharanga 174, Mathews 44)

Ahmed is given the unwanted task of bowling the last over. Tharanga sweetly drives a full toss into the stands. Two runs off the final delivery takes the total to 348.

  •

    Over 49 - Sri 335/1 (Tharanga 164, Mathews 41)

Yadav gives some width and is slashed over point for six by Tharanga. The pressure tells on the bowler as he sprays 5 wides down the leg-side. yadav is proving to be a slow learner as width once again is crashed to the boundary.

  •

    Over 48 - Sri 313/1 (Tharanga 152, Mathews 36)

Tharanga jumps on another short Sharma delivery as he pulls it for four. A nudge into the off-side for two, brings up the 150 for Tharanga. Mathews ends the over with a flourish as he picks up another boundary through mid-wicket.

  •

    Over 47 - Sri 300/1 (Tharanga 144, Mathews 31)

Ahmed comes back for some more punishment. Tharanga swings away another boundary through the leg-side as Ahmed loses his length for the first time in the over. The 300 comes up.

  •

    Over 46 - Sri 291/1 (Tharanga 136, Mathews 30)

Sharma comes back into the attack in an attempt to stop the bleeding of runs. The over starts with good full deliveries which the batsmen cannot get under. Sharma has bowled a very good over in the circumstances, which is ruined as the last ball is clipped for a boundary.

  •

    Over 45 - Sri 282/1 (Tharanga 134, Mathews 24)

Ashwin is slapped through the off-side for four by Mathews. A single takes Tharanga to 134, his highest ODI score. Runs are coming at will.

  •

    Over 44 - Sri 273/1 (Tharanga 133, Mathews 17)

Mathews slog sweeps Jadeja against the turn into the crowd and brings up the 50 partnership. The scoreboard continues to rattle and role as the over ends with another six, this time Tharanga with the slog sweep.

  •

    Over 43 - Sri 258/1 (Tharanga 125, Mathews 10)

Ashwin replaces Jadeja, it will now be up to Mathews to swing with the spin. This illustrates one of the great advantages of a right/left hand partnership. The fielding captain has nowhere to go.

  •

    Over 42 - Sri 250/1 (Tharanga 120, Mathews 8)

Tharanga shows great fitness as he is still fresh enough to sprint three runs after Mathews works Ahmed through mid-wicket. The left-hander then picks the slower ball very early and swats it over mid-on for a boundary. The inexperienced bowler is crumbling under the pressure and is all over the shop. A final boundary brings up the 250.

  •

    Over 41 - Sri 233/1 (Tharanga 107, Mathews 5)

Jadeja returns, possible because it will be more difficult for Mathews to attack the ball spinning away from him. The ball is however spinning into the left-hander who hoiks a four into the leg-side.

  •

    Over 40 - Sri 224/1 (Tharanga 100, Mathews 3)

Ahmed returns for his second spell. Tharanga is starting to look a little nervous as he approaches his century. This is a good opportunity for India to sneak in a few extra dot balls. A gift on Tharanga's pads gives him a boundary which takes his to 99. The single brings up his 100 in only his 2nd innings back in the team. It is his 13th ODI century and he may well cut lose now.

  •

    Over 39 - Sri 215/1 (Tharanga 94, Mathews 1)

Jayawardene plays a handsome cover drive against the turn of Ashwin. the ball sails into the seats. The batsmen tries to repeat the dose, but it skews off the bat and is caught in the ring on the off-side. Mathews has promoted himself and will look to attack the last 11 overs.

  •

    Over 38 - Sri 204/0 (Tharanga 93, Jayawardene 101)

Ashwin came back well in the last over, lets see if Sharma can do the same. The baby faced assassin may now have some mean looking facial hair, but it has not altered his ability with the bat as he brings up his 16th ODI century. The 200 has also come up. Dropped, Tharanga is put down on the cover boundary. We could be in for some carnage in the last 12 overs.

  •

    Over 37 - Sri 195/0 (Tharanga 90, Jayawardene 95)

Kohli keeps the faith as Ashwin is given another over. A few dot balls build some pressure, but Tharanga releases it but going over mid-on and collects another four runs.

  •

    Over 36 - Sri 190/0 (Tharanga 86, Jayawardene 94)

Sharma will share the duty of bowling the power play overs. The bowler is too short once again. Tharanga edges over the keeper and earns four runs. Bad goes to worse as Sharma is warned for running on the pitch. If it happens again then India will be down a bowler.

  •

    Over 35 - Sri 179/0 (Tharanga 81, Jayawardene 88)

Sri Lankan have taken the batting power play one over early. Ashwin is back to bowl the pressure overs. The off-spinner slides down the leg-side and is picked up by Tharanga who picks up a one bounce four over fine-leg before going down the ground for consecutive boundaries. A great start to the batting power play.

  •

    Over 34 - Sri 168/0 (Tharanga 72, Jayawardene 86)

Jadeja is back into the attack. He was the ace bowler in the recent Champions Trophy, but the different conditions have played their part in making him less effective. The first sign of turn draws Jayawardene forward and there is a stumping appeal. No drama for the batsman however, as the decision is correctly not out.

  •

    Over 33 - Sri 164/0 (Tharanga 70, Jayawardene 84)

Raina is given another over. A massive beach ball rolls onto the field and amuses Kohli. The spinner is short and has found no spin. This allows to batsmen to work singles without much fuss.

  •

    Over 32 - Sri 159/0 (Tharanga 68, Jayawardene 82)

Yadav is entrusted with another over. Mahela advances and smashes a drive over cover for another boundary. An appeal for a catch down the leg-side is the most excitement the Indian's have seen in quite some time, but it is correctly given not out.

  •

    Over 31 - Sri 153/0 (Tharanga 67, Jayawardene 77)

Raina is the latest addition to the bowling attack and is immediately pulled for two runs which brings up the 150. The flow of runs does not change even with a variety of bowlers.

  •

    Over 30 - Sri 148/0 (Tharanga 63, Jayawardene 76)

Yadav is back for another spell. A full, wide delivery is slapped through cover for four as Tharanga joins the party. The strike bowler once again fails to affect the break through.

  •

    Over 29 - Sri 141/0 (Tharanga 58, Jayawardene 76)

Jayawardene gets down on one knee early and waits for Kohli to deliver. He hits the full toss over short fine-leg and picks up another boundary. Tharanga is playing the perfect foil as Jayawardene continues the charge.

  •

    Over 28 - Sri 135/0 (Tharanga 57, Jayawardene 72)

Ashwin is mot looking threatening at all. The batsmen are doing it easily now and as long as they don't lose concentration, they should be fine.

  •

    Over 27 - Sri 129/0 (Tharanga 55, Jayawardene 67)

Kohli has brought himself into the attack, perhaps in an attempt to show his bowlers how it is done. A very calm over yields just three runs.

  •

    Over 26 - Sri 126/0 (Tharanga 53, Jayawardene 66)

Ashwin loops one up but Tharanga checks his shot and no harm is done. Jayawardene needs to invitation as he is running down the wicket every chance he gets.

  •

    Over 25 - Sri 120/0 (Tharanga 51, Jayawardene 63)

Yadav is brought back to try and pry a wicket. A wonderful piece of timing brings Jayawardene another boundary through point. The bowler is just a touch too short in an unsuccessful return to the bowling crease.

  •

    Over 24 - Sri 113/0 (Tharanga 50, Jayawardene 57)

A string of singles off Ashwin leads to Tharanga reaching his 50. He was not picked for the Champions Trophy, but is looking to cement a place at the top of the order.

  •

    Over 23 - Sri 108/0 (Tharanga 48, Jayawardene 54)

Jadeja starts another over and the first three balls are worked for singles. the third single is fielded by Kohli, who's left knee plugged into the turf. The physio is now on the field attending to the Indian captain. He seems to be alright as play resumes.

  •

    Over 22 - Sri 104/0 (Tharanga 46, Jayawardene 52)

A single down the ground brings up the 100. Ashwin is milked easily by the two batsmen as he struggles to extract any real turn.

  •

    Over 21 - Sri 99/0 (Tharanga 44, Jayawardene 50)

Both spinners are now operating together. A chip over cover brings Jayawardene the single that gets him his 50. A quicker ball is dragged down, Tharanga uses the pace and guides it past point for a boundary.

  •

    Over 20 - Sri 93/0 (Tharanga 39, Jayawardene 49)

Ashwin comes into the attack. His captain desperately needs a wicket. The first time the ball is given a bit of flight, Tharanga opens is shoulders and gets two runs over mid-on.

  •

    Over 19 - Sri 90/0 (Tharanga 36, Jayawardene 49)

The batsmen are clearly not going to allow Jadeja to settle as they are looking very aggressive. The spinner is milked effectively as Sri Lanka are setting up a wonderful platform.

  •

    Over 18 - Sri 86/0 (Tharanga 34, Jayawardene 47)

Sharma continues after the drinks break. the Sri Lankan's need to be a little careful here, as a break in play often leads to a wicket. The batsmen have started well after the break and the scoreboard continues to tick over.

  •

    Over 17 - Sri 82/0 (Tharanga 33, Jayawardene 44)

The reverse-sweep comes off this time and Jayawardene's charge continues as he picks up another boundary over point. Five off the over is still a good result for the batsmen.

  •

    Over 16 - Sri 77/0 (Tharanga 32, Jayawardene 40)

Sharma is greeted to the bowling crease by Mahela walking down the wicket and slapping the bowler over long-on for the first six of the innings. A hook shot sales down to fine-leg where Yadav is uncertain about whether to go for the catch or not. It bounces just before him and goes for four.

  •

    Over 15 - Sri 65/0 (Tharanga 32, Jayawardene 28)

Jadeja drops a little short and Tharanga plays his favourite cut, picking up another boundary. A leg-bye and a single complete the scoring of another quick over.

  •

Ishant has found a nice line and length. Both batsmen are finding it tough, but are managing to rotate the strike.

  •

    Over 13 - Sri 57/0 (Tharanga 27, Jayawardene 26)

Jadeja comes into attack as the batsmen get their first look at spin. If nothing else, Jadeja will increase the over-rate. A lofted cover-drive brings two runs to Jayawardene. Dropped, Vijay puts down a reverse sweep and point. Mahela gets a second chance.

  •

    Over 12 - Sri 54/0 (Tharanga 27, Jayawardene 23)

Sharma finds a good length and even though the ball has stopped swinging, Tharanga is finding life tough out there. This over alone suggests that if you consistently hit a good area, run scoring will be difficult.

  •

    Over 11 - Sri 51/0 (Tharanga 26, Jayawardene 21)

Ahmed starts another over with a ball that is dragged down and pulled for two runs. He over-corrects and the full delivery is crashed into the covers, but some good fielding prevents any damage. A single into the covers brings up the 50 opening stand, putting Sri Lanka onto a strong position.

  •

    Over 10 - Sri 47/0 (Tharanga 23, Jayawardene 20)

Ishant Sharma replaced Yadav who it is fare to say, was hit out of the attack. The first ball is edged through second slip by the left-hander, but some good fielding on the boundary restricts it to two runs. The two brings up 5000 ODI runs for Tharanga. Jayawardene ends the power play by flicking off his pads for a couple runs.

  •

    Over 9 - Sri 42/0 (Tharanga 20, Jayawardene 18)

Ahmed has done a good job in restricting the damage as Yadav has leaked runs. Another solid over is completed.

  •

    Over 8 - Sri 39/0 (Tharanga 19, Jayawardene 17)

Yadav continues and starts with a full and wide delivery. Jayawardene swings hard, finds the edge, and the ball flies over the slips bouncing just once before crossing the boundary. Once again Yadav digs it in to Tharanga and once again it costs him four runs.

  •

    Over 7 - Sri 30/0 (Tharanga 15, Jayawardene 13)

    Over 6 - Sri 26/0 (Tharanga 14, Jayawardene 10)

Yadav drops short again and is carved through point, giving Tharanga his second boundary. The right-hander now joins the party as Jayawardene picks it up off a length and drop kicks it over mid-on for another boundary.

  •

    Over 5 - Sri 16/0 (Tharanga 9, Jayawardene 6)

The first signs of aggression come as Mahela walks at Ahmed and spoons the ball over cover for two runs. The inexperienced bowler keeps his nerve and continues to hit decent areas.

  •

    Over 4 - Sri 12/0 (Tharanga 8, Jayawardene 3)

Jayawardene looks a far more tougher version of himself, as he sports an impressive set of handle-bars on his usually baby face. A short delivery ruins the over as it is carved down to third-man where Ishant helps it over the boundary.

  •

    Over 3 - Sri 7/0 (Tharanga 4, Jayawardene 2)

Confusing between the two batsmen gives the fielder at square-leg a run out opportunity. Rohit misses the stumps and Tharanga is given a life. The left-handed batsman nudges a couple off his pads as the bowler struggle to find the correct line.

  •

    Over 2 - Sri 5/0 (Tharanga 2, Jayawardene 2)

Yadav takes the other new ball and starts with a wide. It will be a test for the bowlers to adjust to the right/left hand opening partnership, especially if the strike is rotated consistently. Yadav looks a great deal better now that he has the right-handed Jayawardene in his sights and the ball is swinging away towards the slips nicely.

  •

    Over 1 - Sri 3/0 (Tharanga 1, Jayawardene 2)

The new man in the team, Ahmed, is given the first over. The bowler is getting some nice shape and has made both batsmen look a little uncomfortable.
